3. Study Background

This research paper attempts to fill one small gap in the fascinating history of the Riel (Mtis) family. The methodology utilized herein, evolved through reviews of Seine River topographic, geomorphological and hydrological features, historic maps of the Red River Settlement of the 1870s, the early Seignorial River Lot System, map sketches by local historical researchers and photogrammetric maps of current streets and buildings. Air photographs were utilized to verify features not readily discernable from on-site inspections.

Discussions were held with persons competent in knowledge on western grist mills, the Riel family, historic map interpretation, historic resources, followed up with several exploratory field trips to the site. Canoe excursions along the Seine revealed many features unseen from the land perspectives. These will be outlined in the annotated bibliography to follow.
