POLL WATCH UPDATE: It appears most of our counties are approving Proposition 10, but there's a dead heat in Loving County. A nervous anti-Prop.10 crowd awaits.

  • A Gainesville Daily Register article reports on both the Save Our Hides campaign and the Austin Community College protests. Nice work!

So what does a wild and crazy No-on-10er do on a Saturday night on the town? Get tattooed! It looks like this faithful member of the Save Our Hides Committee decided to make a permanent memorial to THE issue which unified a generation politically.
Parody. (In other words, it's a fake! Lighten up.)

A Texas Lawyer article records the plight of Jeff McMeans, Fort Bend County Animals and Hides Inspector, and the chiseling away of his constitutional authority. Thanks for keeping an eye on this one, Texas Laywer staff.

Media endorsement! The Austin Chronicle recommends voting no on Proposition 10 here. The endorsement, listed as an editorial comment below a letter to the editor from Cathy Setzer, an adjunct professor at Austin Community College, states, "... The Chronicle editorial board traditionally recommends that voters at least consider rejecting all proposed constitutional amendments, for some of the same reasons Cathy Setzer cites here. And for this election, we specifically recommended voting No on Prop. 10, although largely out of sheer cussedness. We applaud her students' public advocacy." Thank you, Austin Chronicle editorial staff! We love you!

An article was written on the (partial) history of the Office of Animals and Hides Inspector here in the Beaumont Enterprise about James "Corky" Wheeler Jr., Jefferson Countys former Inspector of Hides and Animals. Write the reporter and let him know what you think!

A near-heretical article ran in the Austin American-Statesman recently: Article.
While it's true Glen Maxey did hold the office and did nothing with it (that should've been the reporter's first clue!) there may be countless other hides inspectors in small counties who do the job for no pay and "off the radar."

The Handbook of Texas has an article on the Office of Animal and Hides Inspector. Check it out, but be warned: It assumes that "few counties, if any" held the office through the '90s.

Here's the history of the bill, so our grassroots activists, campus coordinators, chapter leaders, and home-stretch campaign captains can be equipped with the FACTS of how our Texas Legislature worked to deny our counties the power to save our own hides: History of House Joint Resolution 69

Save Our Hides comes online! The campaign officially kicks off. May this be our San Jacinto and not our Alamo! This election will be decided by 5 percent of the voting population of Texas, so get your handful to the polls and let's shoot down Proposition 10 and tell the Legislature from whom their power is derived!
