Give the Dolphins a Chance!

Date: August 15, 2011

The Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines created a film showing of “The Cove” on January 15, 2011 at Fully Booked located in Bonifacio High Street at the Fort. There were around 80 people who came and there was also a small question and answer portion about how dolphins are becoming endangered and about why dolphin meat shouldn’t be purchased. The documentary “The Cove” is very much related to this topic where it shows how the Japanese

caught and killed a lot of dolphins just so that they can sell these dolphins to amusement parks, while the dolphins that aren’t chosen to be sold are killed and the dolphin meat is sold for the people to eat. A lot of people go to amusement parks where marine animals are being used to give entertainment to people. The audience may really enjoy seeing marine animals do tricks, but what they don’t realize is that the more they go to these amusement parks, the more owners of amusement parks want to catch new marine animals to show the audience. This indicates that more dolphins and other types of marine animals are being caught while others are being killed on the process of catching potential show animals. Another fact that a lot of people aren’t aware of is that dolphin meat is not good for people’s health. It shouldn’t be consumed because it contains a high level of mercury that can endanger the lives of those who eat dolphin meat. Basically, this points out that man won’t benefit from catching and killing dolphins. Only those who make a lot of money from killing dolphins are the ones who benefit from these activities.

The video clearly indicated how dolphins were killed and showed how people wanted to protect what they did because they got a lot of money out of it. A lot of people who attended the film showing felt that it was very unfair for people to kill dolphins or even hold them captive just so that they can gain a lot of profit. There were instances when a dolphin would be held captive and be trained. There was an instance in the documentary when the dolphin which was used in movies or shows became depressed and tried to kill itself because it wasn’t in its natural habitat. It showed the audience that dolphins shouldn’t be held captive and should always be in its natural habitat where it can be with its fellow species so that it can live naturally where it really belongs. There is a chance that there will no longer be any dolphins living during our children or grandchildren’s time because of the selfishness of us humans today.

Upon watching the documentary “The Cove”, the audience thought about how people tend to be ignorant about certain things. People may be intelligent and above other animals, but it is possible that this is so because we were made to take care of other creatures and our surroundings. The process of making this documentary was really difficult seeing that they were hindered by a lot of people. People who are guilty of slaughtering dolphins keep on denying what they are doing. A big part of it is also part of being selfish that man is capable of doing things like these.

This video has made its voice be heard, but there are still certain obstacles to be faced, especially when the Japanese still continue to slaughter dolphins. What a lot of people should be aware of is that people not only in Japan, but from all over the world are killing dolphins. People lack awareness of how killing the dolphins will affect them. There is this saying that what goes around comes around. It shows that what you do will come back to you one way or another. This is becoming evident where people in Taiji were tested positive for mercury poisoning. It has affected not only those who are the ones killing the dolphins, but also their families, and other nations as well.

I think that the people involved in creating the film took extra courage and effort to make the filming a success. I admire them for even risking their lives to expose the wrongdoings of the Japanese. I think that it is very difficult for some people to take action especially when it is about these types of issues. It is possibly because they are afraid that their lives will be harmed, or other people will look them down upon. I think that people keep on saying that change should be made, but they do not put these words into action. I think that the documentary was very effective since it reached millions of viewers worldwide. With this, it brought a lot of pressure to Taiji, Japan to stop slaughtering dolphins.

This type of activity should be something that people take part in. People should start being aware of the fact that our resources are becoming scarce because of human activities that endanger not only the amount of resources, but also the chance of a great life for our future generation. The activity was a success where most of the audience wanted to know more facts about what is happening to the dolphins today and what measures are being taken to prevent people from catching dolphins.

It isn’t often that people witness dolphins swimming together in the oceans and seas, but when that beautiful site is seen, it is something that is really worthwhile. It would be such a shame if the future generation will only get to see what dolphins look like in pictures. Dolphins are very delicate and intelligent creatures that man should take care of. Through joining programs and activities that can help spread awareness to protect dolphins, you can give dolphins a chance to live.
