Dolphin Wall-Paintings

Date: August 13, 2011
Written by: Ria Lim

Dolphin wall-painting is one way to conserve dolphins. Through art, the painters send their message to stop the killing and poaching of these marine mammals. Usually, the wall also shows that these dolphins are swimming in the ocean, so the message of the painting includes the prevention of these animals’ captivity. These animals are not meant to be pets; they’re supposed to be in their natural environment living with their own kind. The wall also reminds people the beauty of the dolphins.

Usually these wall-painting are organized by organizations such as the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines and the World Wide Fund of the Philippines. There is actually a team of artists whose work was to paint dolphin murals all over the country. The team gets invited to different institutions to share their talent and advocacy. One of the most popular team who paint these kinds of walls is the team of Amado Guerrero Saño.   This man is thirty-five years old, and he is a fan of dolphins ever since he was young man. He believes that through his art, he can help protect these beloved creatures by spreading his advocacy to volunteers and other people. The team travels all over the Philippines to paint and to advocate the conservation of these mammals.

Amado has been studying dolphins for eleven years, and he believed that there should be more actions done to help save these threatened animals. Even though, our country has laws against the killing of such animals, and international laws that prevent poaching of endangered animals, thousands of dolphins still get killed every year. What pushed A.G. to start his campaign was the movie ‘The Cove’, and the calls of international actors to stop the hunt for these animals. The movie was one of the most brutal documentaries captured on film about animal cruelty. Dolphins are a staple food in Japan; we understand that this is part of the country’s culture and delicacy; however there should be a limit on the number of dolphins killed each year. The laws against the cruelty of the dolphins should also be strictly implemented. There should also be harsh punishment for those who would violate the laws. Japan and other countries that kill dolphins for food should practice sustainable fishing or else there won’t be any left for the future generations.

There are already a number of dolphin murals all over the country. There is one in De la Salle University, another on a wall in Babuyan Island, the first wall-painting of A.G., and lots of other places in the country. The team actually has a Facebook account named “Dolphins Love Freedom”. This account features all the places where the next wall will be painted. The site actually has more than two thousands followers already. This means that the campaign of A.G. is successful that it has attracted and encouraged two thousand individuals to follow his advocacy. Other than the ones who followed him in Facebook, there are still thousands of people who became aware about the current situation of the dolphins. This crusade has not only spread throughout the country, other nations have become aware of this as well.

According to A.G. Sano, he and his team will not stop the campaign unless all the captive dolphins and other marine mammals will be released from confinement
