How to Find a Bible Verse
I know this guy who went to a Catholic High School, went to church his whole life, and at the age of 16, did not know how to look up a verse in the Bible. It made me feel like a big jerk that I just assumed everyone knew how to do it.Here's some simple instructions if you want to look up a verse. We'll use John 3:16 for an example.
Step 1
The BookThe "reference," or address (John 3:16), contains the book, chapter and verse. In this verse, John is the book, 3 is the chapter, and 16 is the verse.
Books in the Bible are kinda like chapters in other books. They are all different parts of God's story, if you want to put it that way. There is all kinds of history and other info about the order and why each book is in the Bible. You should check it out sometime.
ANYWAY...The easiest way to find a book in the Bible is the same way that you find a chapter in any other book--The table of contents. Obviously, this is located in the front of the Bible.
When you find what page the book starts in, turn there and continue on...
Step 2
The ChapterThe chapter in a book of the Bible is the same as any other book. 1,2,3,4...etc. To find John 3:16 you have to look in the 3rd chapter of the book of John. The chapters are indicated by the big numbers that start chunks of writing. They are usually located at the beginning of a paragraph, usually one or two on a page, depending on the size of your print.
When you have located John chapter 3 it should have a title something about Jesus and Nicodemus.
Step 3
The verseVerses are those little numbers that are at the beginning of every sentence or two. Scan through Chapter 3 until you find verse 16. It should say something like (depending on your translation [NIV, KJV, NLT]):
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
