Campaign Notes

By JOANNA KAKISSIS AND ANGELA HEYWOOD BIBLE, Staff Writers

...A hot spot: The giant Harrington Grove subdivision in Northwest Raleigh is drawing politicians by droves in the campaign's final days. Neighborhood leaders are challenging the city's plans to extend a road and build a subdivision next door, attracting the help of the Neighborhood Coalition for Responsible Development in Raleigh, which opposed Neal Coker's mixed-use project near Cameron Village. Last week, Meeker held a press conference there, saying it is a case study of what is wrong with City Hall's growth management policies.

On Sunday afternoon, Meeker returned for a reception that also drew three of the four at-large City Council candidates -- Cowell, Congleton and Neal Hunt -- as well as Councilman Benson Kirkman, who represents southwest Raleigh's District D, and outgoing Councilman Marc Scruggs Jr., who represents northwest Raleigh's District E.

State officials say crews have cut down trees and damaged a creek to extend North Exeter Way and build an 83-home neighborhood. Meeker, trying to unseat Coble in a runoff Tuesday, finished only seven votes behind Coble in the neighborhood's precinct on Oct. 9.
