FACTS About ...

Proposed Student Transfers to Farrington Grove Elementary

What they say ...

The school administration has repeatedly stated that closing Crawford School and transferring its students will improve educational opportunities and better serve the entire community.

Terre-Haute Tribune Star, 7 Dec 2001, "Most Crawford students would be redistricted to Farrington Grove Elementary School ..."

Crawford School Study, Memo to Daniel Tanoos from Camilla Correll and Daniel Orr, 20 Nov 2001, "By expanding the school neighborhoods at Farrington Grove, Sugar Grove, Davis Park, and Ouabache, Crawford School children can be served at newer facilities which allow far more comprehensive access to student learning.”

Here are the facts ...

·                    Crawford School Study, Memo to Daniel Tanoos from Carlos Aballi, 20 Nov 2001: “The drawing of the new attendance districts for Ouabache, Davis Park, Sugar Grove, and Farrington Grove  Elementary Schools would result in the following distribution of students.

                        Current                        Projected

School                         Enrollment                  Enrollment

Farrington Grove       370                             459                 (+89)”

·                    Crawford School Study, Memo to Daniel Tanoos from Camilla Correll and Daniel Orr, 20 Nov 2001: “Through the expansion of the Farrington Grove and Sugar Grove neighborhoods, ninety-four and thirty-two students would be redistricted respectively”

Ask some questions ...

·                    What opportunities will be diminished for Farrington Grove students if 89 to 94 students are added?

·                    How many rooms will have to be converted to classrooms at each grade level?

·                    What will happen to spaces now used for art, music, counseling, etc. if extra classrooms are added?  Or will the extra students at some grade levels be accommodated by increasing class sizes?

·                    How will the extra students be accommodated in common facilities such as the cafeteria, library, and gymnasium?

·                    If this redistricting would improve educational access for Crawford students, why are Crawford parents speaking out against this plan?

We encourage you to read the Crawford School Study.  The FACTS may surprise you!

TAKE ACTION!

Despite what you may have read in the newspaper or seen on TV, the decision to close Crawford School has NOT been made.

The Vigo County School Board votes next Monday, January 14, on the recommendation to close Crawford.  CRAWFORD WILL NOT CLOSE IF THEY VOTE NO!

Despite what you may have read or heard, the school administration does NOT control a majority of votes on the school board.  The majority of school board members either oppose the recommendation OR have an open mind and are willing to listen to the community.  ARE YOU WILLING TO TELL THEM HOW YOU FEEL?  Or do you want them to think you don’t care – that they should accept the school administration’s recommendation?

If you care about how your school tax dollars are spent, and if you care about your children’s education, please consider doing the following:

1.       Contact the following three school board members who have indicated they are willing to listen to community input on this issue.  Tell them you are a concerned parent who feels the Crawford closing does not make financial sense and will have a negative impact on your child’s education at Farrington Grove Elementary.  DO IT TODAY!

Mr. Gene Shike               Mr. Alferd Hamblen       Mr. Kenneth Schuster

120 Woodbine                1113 Maple Avenue      3383 E. Carol Way

Terre Haute, IN 47803    Terre Haute, IN  47804   Terre Haute, IN  47805

2.       Attend the School Board meeting next Monday, January 14, at the Vigo County School Corporation building, 686 Wabash, at 7:00 pm.  If you are comfortable speaking during the public comment, tell the board that you are a Farrington Grove parent who opposes the closing of Crawford School.  If you are not comfortable speaking, please attend anyway, and stand or raise your hand in response to the persons speaking during the public comment.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

PLEASE CONTACT THE GROUPS LISTED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
