FACTS About ...

Enrollment Trends at Crawford School

What they say ...

The school administration has repeatedly stated that Crawford School enrollment is expected to decrease from its current levels.

Terre-Haute Tribune Star, 7 Dec 2001, "The major reason for the recommendation to close is the school's small enrollment, 150 students, and projections that the enrollment will decline.."

Crawford School Study, Memo to Daniel Tanoos from Carlos Aballi, 20 Nov 2001, "Since 1986 to the present, the student enrollment at Crawford Elementary has declined by over 53%."

Here are the facts ...

·                    Class lists on December 12, 2001 show a total of 163 students at Crawford as follows:

K -- 37, 1st -- 27, 2nd -- 27, 3rd -- 23, 4th -- 24, 5th -- 25.

·                    In 1986, elementary schools included grades K-6.  Today, they only include K-5.

Ask some questions ...

·                    Why is enrollment projected to decline when there are more students in the lower grades than the upper grades?

·                    Isn't a comparison to 1986 misleading because 6th graders no longer attend elementary schools?
