Adapted from,  A& P by John Updike

At the A & P

They entered the A& P,
Produce fresh and carefree.
Barefooted, youthful, and cute,
Clad scantly in their bathing suits.
Masculine eyes. Awed. Beguiled.
Watching the trio, slip in and out of isles.
The Queen prim and proper, flanked by her court,
As commoners pass by with no retort.
Bolden by a confident haughtiness,
They strut their youthful loveliness.
Checkout boys wish, oh if they were mine,
As the trio approach the checkout lines.
Then the manager with some distress,
Bemoans their inappropriateness.
Here, bare shouldered girls have no place,
Queen and court blush now, in self-disgrace.
Herring Snacks in hand they take their leave.
Sammy quits in protest. No reprieve.
In an empty parking lot he contemplates,
Hardships encountered when you tempt fate.
