Comments: I have been a loyal Savatage fan for many years. Savatage has influence me in my own musical ventures and have been my main source of sanction from the world for about seven years. Hearing the music of these talented men has helped me through everything I have ever encountered emotionally. That would include DWD, as well. Criss, I would agree, is what energized the band, but Savatage still continues strong, and with much more than just the memory of Criss, but with his spirit. I, too, was distraut to hear of his fatality. Truely a shame and injust occurance. "And the lights, turn them off, my friend. And the ghosts, we'll just let them in, cause, in the dark, it's easier to see." (When the Crowds are Gone, Savatage)

Comments: The author of this page had a lot of good observations. Pitrelli and Criss are totally different guitar players, which is why Pitrelli is very un- Criss like. The only guitar player I can think of inthe whole history of metal who WAS very Criss- like is Randy Rhodes. It's too bad he couldn't have replaced Criss... But I suppose geniuses like Criss and Randy are too good to last. Savatage IS still a viable abnd and I personally love their new music as much as I do their old. I just like them in a different way- like old Ozzy and new Ozzy. Zak will never be Randy- like, but that's what I enjoy about Ozzy now- the new and different interpretations of the old music. Savatage has suffered, but I think the great and brillient music Criss' bro Jon is still putting out with Savatage is the best tribute one could possibly give to Criss. And as far as Skolnick goes- give the man a break! He's a great guitar player, too, but the shoes he had to fill are simply too big for ANY guitar player alive today to fill! Criss will live on in the hearts of Savatage fans everywhere, as the dedication in Handfull of Rain so eloquently puts it. Gods bless you all. Nighthawk

Comments: Tracey, Great site!!! I first saw Jon and Criss when Criss was a mere 14 at a local theatre in downtown Clearwater, FL at a battle of the bands. At that time they were called Metropolis. This was just after the NWOBHM movement had emerged from the UK. At that time I had a metal fanzine called "Tampa Bay Heavy Metal Enterprise" it lasted a couple of issues. It was during this stint I had the pleasure to come in contact with and became close friends with several influential press people from around the world. I then scraped together some (everything I had at the time) cash, approached "Avatar" and I formed Par Records. We agreed to a deal. The first time that I formally met the band was at their rehearsal studio, an old shack about 10'X10' in Palm Harbor. After several pre-production meetings at the shack, we decided to book some time at Morrisound Studios in Tampa. The results were the three songs that made up "The City Beneath the Surface" EP. There was only 1000 "City" EP's pressed. Out of the 1000 there was 100 yellow vinyl editions and about 5 copies that were almost like a camoflauge color as the vinyl was changed from yellow to black. These yellow and camo colored EP's are the rarest Savatage records in the world. They decided to change the name from Avatar to Savatage just after the release of "City". We were back in the studio and finished the rest of what became "Sirens". Working with Criss at that time was an incredible experience. He was by far the most talented, level headed kid you would ever hope to meet. He would pick up his guitar and lay down the most melodic riffs effortlessly and then say "let me do one more time, I can do better". And sure enough he would do it better. At that time the music was coming from deep inside of Criss and Jon's heart and I think that's what made "Sirens" and "The Dungeons" the cornerpiece of their work. It was some of the happiest and most joyest times that I spent in the music business. We spent less than 40 hours recording and completely mixing "Sirens". With all of the technology and money that goes into recording today "Sirens" still cranks amoungst the best. My favs include "I Believe", "Sirens", "Scream Murder" and "The Dungeons are Calling". It's hard to listen to any of them today without shedding a tear and remembering the times that Criss and Dawn were hanging out at my house talking and partying. Criss I love ya and man do I miss ya!. Tracey thanks man! Dan (not a kid anymore) Johnson
