Edgie's Savannah's Pried

Let me introduce to you Edgie's Savannah's Pried.
No it's not spelled incorrectly, I spelled it like this because Savannah was the nosiest little puppy I had ever seen. She pried into everything as a puppy.  But, of course, that is the nature of the Basenji.

So, when I decided it was time for another basenji, I called Jim Edgerton, (Edgie's Basenjis), the same breeder that I got Tigger (Edgie's Tigger Tramp Wahl) from over twenty years ago.
When I spoke to him on the phone, he just happened to have a puppy he thought I would like.  He said this puppy bitch was his pick of the litter,  but his wife wanted another one from the litter and they could only keep one.  So, he agreed to let me have this bitch.

At this particular time it was winter and Ohio is very cold.  Savannah was born in November a very cold month and putting her on a plane was not going to happen.
As it turned out, Mrs. Edgerton was going to be driving South to a exhibit at dog show in Florida in March. She was going to pass through Georgia and would be going through Savannah, Georgia.  I had a niece that lived in Savannah at the time who could pick her up or be her drop off so to speak.

This is the story of how Savannah got her name  My niece picked her up from the Edgerton's, kept her overnight,  and then my sister-in-law was going to visit her daughter in Savannah, would bring this puppy back to Eatonton, Georgia with her where my husband and son drove to pick up Savannah when my sister-in-law returned to her home.

When my sister-in-law Peggy pulled in her driveway, Joe, my husband and BJ, my son were already there waiting to pick up this puppy.  It was a 2 hour drive for them, and 2 hours back home.
What a trip this little girl had from Ohio to Savannah, Georgia a 12 hour drive, then  overnight in Savannah , 4 hours to Eatonton Georgia, and finally 2 hours to Kennesaw Georgia.

It is certainly understandable why Savannah hates getting into the car to go somewhere.  She whines  and cries the whole time she is in the car.
Basenjis may be barkless, but believe me they make up for it with whining, crying and screaming.

My First Show Dog

We got Savannah when  she was 4 months old.  Since Mr. Edgerton knew me previously, as I had  purchased Tigger from him 20 years earlier.  He felt like he could trust me.  He is very particular to whom he sells a "show quality" basenji.

He gave me" Full Registration" on Savannah, and said, "since she was my pick of the litter, why don't you just go ahead and try your hand at confirmation".

Well, I really didn't intend to buy a "show quality" basenji, I just wanted a pet.

My husband Joe, thought it was a good idea, so we started to practice with her and entered her in her first AKC Confirmation Show when she turned 6 months.

Savannah was a real "pip" in the show ring....She would chase her tail on the go around, and just plain acted silly.  The judges would laugh and thought it was cute and funny, but they wouldn't give her 1st place.

The Maturing of Savannah

We were advised by a few basenji people to take a break from the show ring, to give Savannah a chance to grow up and mentally mature.

That was probably the "biggest mistake" that I made.  I learned the hard way that if you intend on showing your puppy, they "NEED" to be exposed to the show environment.

We gave her a break from the show ring for about 6 months.  When it was time to go back in the ring, well, she just wasn't that interested.  She was perky outside the ring, but when she walked in that ring, her head went down.

What's a mother to do!

Savannah's Elicit Affair

In 1999 Georgia had a very warm winter, and basenji bitches usually come in season once a year.  Because it was so warm, a lot of bitches were having 2 seasons.

Savannah wasn't really enjoying the confirmation ring, as she just didn't have the heart for it.  I decided that she would be a good brood bitch and when she came in season again, I would like to breed her.  Savannah was now 3 years old.

My very good friend, LoAnne Miller of SIENNA Basenjis and I had been talking about breeding Savannah with her boy, Boone. Boone has a wonderful pedigree and comes from some very impressive basenji stock.  He is gorgeous, has no basenji health issues, and has a wonderful personality.

Mid March, Savannah was into her 2nd season.  I took her to the Vet for her annual exam and shots.  The Vet told me that she would be fertile the next week, and that if I was going to breed her, that was the time.  I called LoAnne at work to give her the news about what the Vet said about Savannah's fertility.

We planned to get Savannah and Boone together on Tuesday and Thursday of that week.

Well, on Monday night (the day before Boone was to come over), I am getting undressed from my work clothes, and I hear a painful "squeal" from the backyard.  I rushed out into the back yard in my slip, and Joe came running at the same time to see what happened.

There in the middle of the back yard is Sting and Savannah "tied".   Joe and I held each of the dogs until Sting was able to pull away from Savannah.

I couldn't believe it, I really didn't think that Sting had it in him.  Because, he wasn't showing any signs of interest towards Savannah.  He wasn't sniffing her or clicking.

Well, to make a long story short....9 weeks later we had puppies.
