Professional Background
Personal
As a person from Surry County, I feel a communion with the students and parents.  I believe that it is important to understand students and their unique personalities and interests.  Personally, I am interested in a number of things--not all in the academic field (believe it or not! :) ).  I am an avid reader of historical biographies and fiction.  I also love numerous other books.  My favorites include: Harry Potter,The Chronicles of Narnia, All the Kings Men, and The Notebook (to name a few). I absolutely enjoy movies of all types.  I also like science fiction, numerous sports, and the Fall.

As a teenager, I attended Surry Central High School.  Upon graduation, I moved to Raleigh and studied at North Carolina State University for two years.  There, I did an internship with school-aged children in a less affluent location.  I learned to appreciate a multi-cultural environment while addressing the various learner needs.  After two years at N.C. State, I transferred to Appalachian State University where I will complete my undergraduate work in History, Secondary Education.  While here, I have completed two interships and will begin student teaching in the Spring of 2006--giving me a rich background in education and instruction.

Rationale For Social Studies
To fully gain a perspective of the world today, one must research the past, from the beginning to the present.  To understand America's place in the world, a look must be taken at various other diverse cultures that developed around the world.  In order to become a fully capable citizen in today's society, one must grasp the basic ideals that our country was founded upon.  From there, one should develop an understanding of their world around them: economically, geographically, and politically.  Social Studies in the curriculum is imperative for a culturally enlightened and active citizen.
