STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

SAURABH CHHAPARWAL

SUBPLAN: Research Assistantship

A strong desire to find something new and to contribute to science and technology has always gripped me. This strong urge, coupled with my understanding from undergraduate education, only an introduction to the vast amount of knowledge, has motivated me to pursue career in research. After having the best possible undergraduate education in the country at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, I want to study further and do research in various fields of Textile with more emphasis on Fabric Technology and developing Software Applications for Textiles.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:

“ ‘Success’ comes before ‘Work’ but only in Dictionary so always Work hard to get Success in Life”

This is the Fatherly adage, which precisely sums up philosophy of my life. Born in a Middle class business family, I was brought up with the drive to strive for excellence in all.

Thus, with excellent Academics in Junior High School, I knew with certainty that engineering would be my career path. Following a grueling high school career and an arduous admission process (about 1% success results), I was accepted to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India for my bachelor’s degree in Department of Textile Technology (the only one among all the 6 IIT’s). This quest taught me tenacity and discipline, also I learnt that with hard work, focus and self-confidence I could accomplish the goals I had set for myself.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Since my High School, I have been greatly interested in trying out experiments over anything like calculator, audio-tapes etc. that goes out of order or even working. To understand their functioning, working and to correct their dis-orderliness used to be my hobbies. I have always come up with hand-made working games & models for my school annual functions and Physics practical classes.

Admission to IIT have given me an ocean of such opportunities and further intensified my inquisitiveness about learning and understanding phenomena. It has also given me opportunities not only to learn but also to contribute something new and innovative to the existing system thus, I have extracted buckets of information along with pouring few glasses back into this vast ocean of knowledge.

RESEARCH & WORK EXPERIENCE:

My undergraduate education in the Department of Textile Technology has provided me with a strong technical base in Textiles. I have tried to utilize this base of IIT to give the best possible yield.

While all my batch mates were enjoying their holidays during summer of 2000, I took up a project for the “Designing and fabrication of a viscometer for the online monitoring of starch liquor viscosity” as my summer project which, later got converted into Mini-Project (under guidance of Prof. P.K. Hari). This project has given me enough learning about fluid flow behavior and practical approaches to materialize theoretical phenomena. While designing it I came across many practical considerations that has to be accounted for to put an idea into entity and the project was successful, though with some limitations.

I did my summer internship after 3rd year (in 2001) at Sri Ram Rayons, Kota. There I learned about the Rayon Filament Production process. I also worked on the characterization of the fabric defects, with its cause evaluation and remedial measures from the packing stage to filament production.

Moving with the IT boom I have developed a program for “Developing Motifs with the help of Fractal Geometry” as my ‘Independent Study’. Though this program produced unlimited fabric designs but had a limitation of having no control over designs made. One used to make design and than accept or reject it according to his liking. Thus, I developed new ‘software’ to develop motifs and patterns by mathematical transformation of geometrical figures, which had no such limitations.

My final year B.Tech. project involved developing software for “Optimization of fabric properties for a given range of Fabric Parameters” (under guidance of Prof. B.K. Behera) which was a very good blend of Textile Fundamentals with Programming Skills. During the course of implementation I interacted with the Textile Industry to make it useful for versatile products.

Also, till the end of this project I have decided to first work in the industry so as to first understand its requirements and than pursue for higher studies. Thus, with the keen interest in Fabric Technology I have joined Auro Weaving Mills, Baddi (Weaving subsidiary of Vardhman Spinning and General Mills, Ludhiana). Here I got the chance to work on the-state-of-the-art, latest technology machines from Bennninger, Sucker Muller for warping and sizing, and Picanol (Delta, Omni and Omni Plus) and Tsudakoma (209i, Zax and Zax-E) Air Jet Looms.

Here in Company I have done several successful studies with in a short span of about 5 months. Some of the Key achievements are as follows:

v      Optimization of Size-Recipe and Air Pressure requirement on looms for various Fabric and Yarn Parameters for some of the running articles.

v      Time & Motion Study of warping, drawing-in and roll doffing process which resulted in increased Warping Eficiency by ~6-7%, increased yarn drawing-in speed by 50% and proposed decrease in manual labor strength by 5 persons.

v      Establishing Laboratory set-up and experimental procedures for various Testing  (according to an ISO-9000-2000 requirements)

v      Presently proposing a project for ‘Effect on Fabric Properties for Yarns from different Yarn Spinning Technologies ‘(like, Ring, Rotor, COM-4, Elite etc.)

CAREER GOALS:

Working in the industry have given me enough reasons that I should opt for research and further studies not only to satiate my inner instincts and the quest to learn, but also to give my best to the industry. So now, I have a hopeful vision of myself working in a challenging research-oriented environment.

With this Goal I have opted for Research and found one such opportunity at your end, with some of your field of interest and expertise to be exactly what I was looking for.

I believe that such credentials, experience and keen interest will give me an opportunity to work with you in a free and open mind.

CONCLUSION:

I am aware that such research projects expect very high standards from its students. On my part, I can assure you of sincerity and hard work. I am confident that my enthusiasm will enable me to meet your expectations.

Eagerly looking forward to join the quest of knowledge.
