Geographical Information

Located in the North in Andhra Pradesh State. (80-82 deg. East and 17-18.5 deg North) Very rich in mineral deposits., especially the Coal. Copper, iron, quartz and Biretes being the other important ore deposits available. 3rd largest district in A.P. area_wise. Forest area is around 45%, the richest in A.P. All the valuable wood types are available. It experiences severe condition in all the seasons, it touches 48 deg.C in Summer and 17 deg.C in winter and rainfall is above 250 cm per annum. It has krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari in its East and Madhya Pradesh state in the North. The Major river Godavari and Kinnersani, Sabhari are passing through the district. Also the nagarjuna sagar left canal ends here, making this district self_sufficient in agricultural needs.

The People

Around 40% of the population are Tribes. Mostly Koyas, Konda Reddy and Lambadi sects are present. Scheduled Caste population is around 30%. The District is equally developed in agriculture and industry. The communist movement is strongly felt in this industrial district. Eventhough People are peace loving, Naxal movement is also strong in this district. The dearest son of this district (Late) Jalagam. Vengala Rao worked as most successful Cheif Minister of Andhra Pradesh (1974-79)., and as Union Cabinet Minister for Industries.
