A Test Drama

I thought a lot to write something about this event, but still have some reasons not to disclose it because it may be some sort of bad thing to tell about a well known institution. I thought that I may be a poor competent and that is why I was ignored but that was not the fact there. I must tell you in detail what happened.

Sometimes ago I read a job advertisement in a very popular daily of Pakistan. The job was for lecturer at UET(University of Engineering) Peshawar. So I along with a friend tried to test our ability as well as luck to participate in the war of employment. There was no welcome but one must have to sign on a paper later to participate in a written test.

As I remember the test was to write an essay on the Development of Industries in Pakistan and another test was a paper about computer science. This second paper questions were taken as far as my knowledge lets me know was "Wireless Communication" and there was no database, General networking, Programming or data structures related questions. I think the questions were taken solely to limit the selected students to study those material so that the already "selected" students find it easy to answer and for the remaining, the ground will be tough. After the test was taken no result was disclosed but we were told that we should wait till we were called for interview. So the Test Drama was ended. I participated so many Dramas just like this in my short career.

One I remember was at District Swabi Education Office for the post of Computer Operator where when the "Test" was held was so easy that every one passed it. When the result was announced, I by luck got the first and top position. I was as assured to be Key Puncher as the day; when I got at the interview time that there will be another written "Test". So I along with others participated once more in the so called "Test". This time by the God Grace I was at the second from the top position. But the interviewer again looking at the list announced that another "Practical Test" will be taken. The written test took place in Topi while the Practical Test was held in Shahmansoor where the district education office is located. At the practical test the officials asked me to write "Ahmad Hussain". I wrote at the computer like this:

AHMAD HUSSAIN

Then the other person a clerk who knew very little about the computers asked me to create a Table in MS Access. I did that in seconds but the person told me that you used a shortcut way that we do not use here. Then I did it the other way. He confirmed that, that is the way. After all of us have gone through this process. The official told us to wait for a list for the final selection. Several times I asked about the test results but no one told me. Nor I saw any list of results. After some days when I asked about that two staff members told me that the proper candidates have been selected and are working. I got astonished that neither of the successful candidates at the time I knew were not the persons to be selected.

These and so many others are the daily routine here in Pakistan where offices are full of well to do people who are proud to announce that "we have no need to do job but it is just time pass". These people only allow their relatives to enter jobs either they are competitive or not.

Shaukat a Mechanical Engineer, who have got first division throughout his educational career including his engineering degree from UET Peshawar told me that he was interviewed by a company official after passing the Test. The first question at the interview was from where he got his degree? He answered from UET Peshawar. The second question was: Where have you worked? He answered at Gadoon Amazai. The official then told him: "Now you can go".

There are a lot about the Test Dramas but today it is enough. Goodbye.
