Act One, Scene I

MOTHER: [Enters] I'm going out in a minute.
GIRL: [indifferently] Okay.
MOTHER: Do you want me to get you anything while I'm out?
GIRL: No.
MOTHER: [offering] Friendly's icecream? A new star?
GIRL: [abruptly interrupting] It only makes me feel guiltier when you buy me things.
MOTHER: I know, but I know you're sad and I---
GIRL: Yeah well---
MOTHER: ---and I don't like it when you're sad.
GIRL: Well I don't like it when you pity me.
MOTHER: [sounding heartbroken; after a moment's hesitation:] I'm just being a mom. [Exits]

To Hell With You And All Your Friends

I thought maybe things would have changed since years past. Maybe I'd see things differently. But on the contrary: I still hate autumn.

A Letter I've Been Meaning To Send

Dear BandMembersWhoSatBehindMeTonightAtTheFootballGame,

Approximately how many times must I turn around and say, "I'm about this close to killing you all," before you stop hitting me with your trumpet and shoving me aside and shouting nonsense at the top of your lungs? Get back to me on that so that I might arrange my agenda around your scheduled apology.

Yours,
Molly Griffin

I Hate Your Titles

I can smell the smoke on you when you come inside. You don't fool me.

I Love Your Titles

I made big New Year's resolutions this past January, but I did not share them with you, and I'm not about to. Instead I have made a list of things I would like to do between now and December. And here is the list:

  • learn to knit.
  • start drinking tea.
  • get a coat. no, a real coat.
  • wear a scarf with that coat.
  • learn to do laundry.
  • stop wearing band t-shirts, dammit.
  • write that screenplay.
