WAINWRIGHT RESEARCH

Welcome to Greg Wainright's Wainwright Research page. The Wainwright / Wainright family of southeastern Georgia originated in Pitt County, North Carolina. JAMES WAINWRIGHT was the father of the two siblings, James, Jr. and Joseph, who moved to Georgia in the early 1800s.Please contribute any knowledge that you have that my extend this James Wainwright research before 1768. As part of my research, I am also interested in ANY information on American Wainwrights of the 1700s/1800s. All spellings of the name are applicable. It's not currently known who James' ancestors were.

Timeline and migration of the Georgia descendants of James Wainwright of Pitt County, NC

Census Records of southeast Georgia Wainrights/Wainwrights (1820-1920) new.gif (116 bytes)

Note: These are some Wainwrights to investigate. Other researchers have hit a dead-end with linking James to other Wainwrights who were in NC prior to his birth. Most speculation points to him being the first of our line in NC and that we should look north for his ancestors. However, other NC Wainwrights from his time frame and later may well be our relatives. I know nothing about James' first wife and only the names of the children from his this first marriage. They were: John, William, Daniel, and Lydia. Of the second marriage, we only know the names of two of his children(James, Jr. and Joseph) and he had a total of seven. Blue underlined words are links to more information.

A James Winwright, sometimes listed as Wainwright, and this name had been associated with many land grants in eastern North Carolina and as the holder of several public offices during the period of 1713 to 1743. Research has proven these to be one and the same person, James Winwright. He was a Deputy Surveyor for the Colony; member of the Lower House of Assembly from Pasquotank Precinct; Provost Marshall of the County of Albemarle and the town of Edenton; holder of land grants in Pasquotank, Perquimans and Carteret counties; and in later life was coroner, treasurer, tax collector, and justice of the peace for Carteret County. He was deceased in 1743 and his will disclosed no male issue to further his name.

There was another James who appeared just before the period when mine showed up in North Carolina. Could my James have come north from Savannah to N.C. and then returned to Georgia later? This item is actually of James' brother Nevile of Ireland.

John Wainwright of Pitt County, NC. See 1784 Sarah Mundine reference in James' timetable above. Land adjoining Robert Flake on the Tar River is mentioned in both. How does he tie into James??? Could this be the John who was son of James, Sr. from his first marriage??? First known record of David Fleming in Pitt County can be found in the surviving deed books of the county, recorded November 16, 1777 as witnessed of grantee John Fleming to grantor Fitch Harris. On December 1, 1787, "David Fleming enters 100ac in Pitt County on N side of Tar R; border: the great pocoson, Robert Flake and John Wainwright." Last mention in Pitt County deed books is on August 10, 1820, referring to his property adjacent to that of James Shivers. David Fleming appears in the Federal Census of Pitt County, North Carolina from 1790 through 1820. Note: In 1791, a 150-acre tract near Markam Swamp was sold by my James Wainwright to David Fleming, a neighbor.
Noah Wainwright. Born around 1790-1800. Had the following children - Sarah Elizabeth born in 1824, Vesta birth date not sure, Rebecca born about 1835. Vesta married a Jones, Sarah Elizabeth married a Meeks, and Rebecca married a Briley. All lived in Pitt Co. N.C. Could Noah have been brother to John, Jr. and Joseph? We do know that there were three other male children and two females that we haven't identified.
Thomas Wainwright, born abt. 1789 in NC. Married Sarah Corken of Georgia and died in Louisiana.
Another page with information on this same Thomas. According to the1850 and 1860 St. Helena Parish, LA federal censuses was born in NC about 1790. The 1870 census for Tangipahoa Parish, LA, says his state of birth was SC. He is listed on page 68 of vol. III of the American State Papers: Public Lands as a claimant by settlelement in St. Tammany Parish, LA, in 1802; he is also listed on p417 as a claimant by settlement in St. Helena Parish in Feb 1820. He married Sarah Corkern, daughter of John Cockern and Sarah Bickham, on 22 Jan 1810 in Liberty, MS territory (now Amite Co. MS). Thomas' son Thomas married Jerusha Saunders, and through a daughter of Thomas and Jerusha who died within a year or so of giving birth to an out-of-wedlock child, Zilla Eupora Wainwright who married Marcus Leon Hogan in Tangipaho Pr. LA. Zilla and Marcus moved to MS between 1899 in LA and the 1900 MS federal census.
Martha Wainwright of Beaufort Precinct in 1711.Martha was the wife (common-law?) of S.C. Governor Robert Daniel and bore him three children: John, Sarah and Martha who were recognized by their father and bore his name. Martha sued over the division of Robert Daniel's estate and appointed James Leigh with Power of Attorney. The lawsuit, Martha Wainwright vs Jno Norton was discontinued by the General Court of North Carolina in July 1712. Shortly thereafterwards Martha Wainwright returned to her home in South Carolina.

The famous WWII General Jonathan Mayhew "Skinny" Wainwright's   family:

- On 6/5/1790, Peter Wainwright married Elizabeth Mayhew(daughter of Rev. Jonathan Mayhew and  Elizabeth Clarke (daughter of John and wife Elizabeth (Breane) Clark). Elizabeth was born in 1759 and died 7/5/1829 in England. Peter was a tobacconist. He is said to have been a prosperous English merchant  and came to Boston before the American Revolution. Peter and Elizabeth returned to England for the birth of their first son in 1791. They didn't return to Massachusetts until 11 years later. Their children were: Jonathan Mayhew (b. abt. 1791 England), Peter and Eliza (b. 5/8/1794 Liverpool, England - married 9/6/1831 Dr. Walter Channing).

-- Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (son of Peter and Elizabeth) was born abt. 1791 and died 9/21/1854. He graduated from Harvard in 1812. He was inducted as minister of Episcopal Trinity Church (settlement #256 - Nov. 24, 1833 and left Feb. 1838). He married ????? and fathered 14 children. One of them was  Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright II.

--- Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright II married Maria Page on 2/5/1844 in Clark Co., Virginia. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1837 as a midshipman. By the Civil War, he was a lieutenant and in 1862 was given his first command, the Harrett Lane, flagship of a mortar flotilla. He saw a lot of action in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coasts of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.  He was wounded six times and finally died of a mustket ball through his head. They had four children, including: Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright III, Robert Powell Page Wainwright.

---- Robert Powell Page Wainwright was a West Point graduate and cavalry officer in the Indian wars and was also stationed in Walla Walla, Washington. He also died fighting for his country. He was married to Josephine Serrell. Their children were: Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV and Helen Serrell Wainwright.

----- Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV was born 1883 and died 1953. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He married Adelle Holley. He was an army general in WWII and was nicknamed "Skinny". Below is some information on his army life. General Wainwright and Adelle had a son Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright V.

Some information contributed by Rodney Wainwright. Some from Hero of Bataan: The Story of General Jonathan M. Wainwright by Duane Schultz - St. Martin's Press New York

General Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright was born in Walla Walla, Wash., Aug. 23, 1883, d. Sept. 2, 1953, American general who aided Gen. Douglas MACARTHUR in the defense of the Philippines early in World War II. After MacArthur was ordered to Australia in March 1942, Wainwright took command of the besieged defense forces until they were overwhelmed by the Japanese onslaught. Wainwright was taken prisoner (May 6, 1942) after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. He remained a war prisoner until August 1945, one month before the Japanese surrender. Upon his return to the United States, he was made a full general and awarded the Medal of Honor. I've been asked all of my life if I am related to General Wainwright of WWII? I've read that his son lived for years in Clay County, FL and that General Wainwright was paraded through the streets of Starke, FL after he returned to the U.S. following his imprisonment in the fall of Corregidor. Isaac was a son of Richard and Ann Wainwright, natives of Devonshire, England, who settled in Gaskill Twp. about 1822. #38 Private WAINRIGHT, Thomas, killed 24 Feb, 1781
Apparently there was a VAINWRIGHT family in No.Co. census through
the 1800's starting with the 1810 or 20 census? There is also rumor of some of the Wainwrights in Pitt County being German. I would guess that if there were some German W(V) ainwrights in NC, they probably weren't our family. It is perhaps just another spelling change within the family.

In Somerset County (now Wicomico), Maryland on the Eastern Shore there are/were some Wainwrights. I'm intrigued by the Wainwrights and Robertsons who were so intertwined there like they were later in NC and in GA. Could they have been some of our cousins who didn't continue South from Massachusetts to GA? See Shari Handley's Eastern Shore Maryland Genealogy Project for further information on those items below.
William WAINWRIGHT was born cir 1675, place unknown. Speculation exists based upon a family legend that the first Wainwright ancestor came down from the Puritan colony of Boston. William married Mary CANNON, daughter of Stephen CANNON and Judith BLOYCE, around 1690, and the marriage brought William part of Mary's paternal land in
"Cannon Shott" and "Doughty's Lott", both on the south side of Wetipquin Creek, south of the Nanticoke River. William added to his land, acquiring "Woolhope" and "Pasturage", both on the north side of the Wicomico. William died about 1711. The children of William and Mary WAINWRIGHT were:

1.Stephen WAINWRIGHT, b cir 1690, m Mary EVANS, d 1763-5
2.* Cannon WAINWRIGHT, b cir 1691, m Rebecca ____, d 1754
3.James WAINWRIGHT, b cir 1692, m Eleanor COLLIER, d 1794-5
4.William WAINWRIGHT, b cir 1693, d after 1763
5.Judith WAINWRIGHT, b cir 1694

* Note: This Cannon name interests me. This Cannon name was used as a middle name by the Knox family in SE Ga. These Knoxs travelled with the Wainwrights and Robertsons and appear to have the same Massachusetts roots.

JOSHUA WAINWRIGHT FAMILY GRAVEYARD
Located north of Mezick Road, east of Clara Road and just west of Shiles Creek, this little graveyard is not visible from the road. It lies back a few feet into the woods north of a small field, and is in horribly overgrown condition, nearly inaccessible at the time it was visited and transcribed by Shari Handley, Robert Simms, Paul Willing, Jill Pevear, and Chris Pevear on August3, 1997.
