LEE Research

This page is devoted to researching the ancestors of John Lee (RS) who lived in Wayne County, NC in the late 1700s and is buried in Ware County, GA. We are in the process of determining if Walter Washington Lee is his father. A couple of different sources has provided this relationship. If anyone has any additional information that would further the research, please let me know. I will be updating this page as new information comes along. Thanks.

Walter Washington Lee (b. abt 1725) is said to be the father of John Lee. Nothing proven though.
John Lee was an early settler of Ware County, Georgia, and is thought to have been born between1750 and 1760 in North Carolina.(It is possible that he was actually born in Virginia). However, it is thought that he was born in NC in the Craven Co, Johnston Co, Wayne Co, Halifax Co, Chowan Co area. John married Elizabeth (unknown surname) and lived in Wayne County, North Carolina, until about 1800 when he moved with his family to Georgia. He became among the first settlers in 1819, and is found there in the 1820 census.
John and Elizabeth lived in Bulloch County, GA as early as 1798 when he bought land there. John was a member in 1817 of Beard's Creek Baptist Church, Tattnall County,GA and in 1818 was a member of "Purchase Church" on the Satilla River in Appling County, GA. (The church was renamed Little Satilla Baptist Church in 1819.) Resided 4 miles south of Alma, now Bacon County. He was a delegate from his church to the Piedmont Baptist Association in 1817, 1818, 1819, 1820, and 1823. Data from old minutes of Piedmont Association confirm this information and also shows that the church was dissolved in 1826.
John Lee was a Revolutionary soldier in North Carolina (page 60 Knight's NC Roster of the Revolution). He entered the military at Halifax, NC.
John drew land as a Revolutionary Soldier in the 1827 Land Lottery, residing at the time in Ware County, GA. In the creation of Ware County out of Appling in 1824, John and family were placed in the new county. His home was originally in Bacon County, GA but his last few years were spent in the southern part of Ware on or near the Suwannee River where he is found in the 1830 census. He died there sometime about 1838.
John died in Ware Co, GA in Fargo, (now Clinch Co, GA). He is buried at Boney Bluff Primative Baptist Church Cemetery. According to cemetery records he was the son of Walter Washington Lee.

John's son, Lewis Lee, was the administrator of John Lee's estate. Ware County records prior to 1847 having been burned, no record there is available as to the administration. However, the files of "The Southern Recorder" of Milledgeville, Georgia, show an advertisement of sale dated September 1, 1839, by Lewis Lee as Administrator, advertising the cattle of his deceased father for sale at the former's house in Ware County to be sold Saturday, November 9, 1839. The wife of his son, Lewis Lee, was Susannah Walker, daughter of Isham Walker and grand-daughter of Littleberry Walker, Sr., of Wayne County. Lewis moved from Ware to present Clinch County in the 1830's then in
1845 to Florida. They were also member of Little Satilla Baptist Church but transferred their memberships to Union Church on the Alapaha River, joining at the arm now Bethany Church in Clinch County, June 12, 1841. On September 12, 1845, they were dismissed by letter to New Hope Church in Florida.
