Hi Greg, I found your homepage while surfing in the Charlton/Camden County webpages. I believe we may have some connections.  I am researching Drury, O'Quin, Davis, Smith and Wainwright and found all of them in your surname list.   My Great Grandfather was William SMITH,born abt 1860,married 1t, Rachel DAVIS, 2nd to a WAINWRIGHT,I don't know her first name, one of the children of the 2nd marriage was James Randall Smith.  All my ancestors came from the Camden/Charlton area. My O'quin line goes back to Elijah O'Quin, who was killed by Indians in Florida along with his wife. Elijah is my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather. I am descended from his son James Bates O'quin, and his son Samuel Mance O'Quinn.  Samuel Mance O'QUINN married Rosa Lee DRURY, daughter of David Drury & Susan SIKES.  David is the son of Charles Nevel DRURY and grandson of Mills Nevel DRURY.  Mills DRURY is the son of Charles DRURY born abt 1700 in Virginia, and died abt 1760 in Halifax County, NC.   With all the similarities we must have a connection somewhere???? Unfortunately, I don't know the parents names of William SMITH and Rachel DAVIS.   Do you have any info on them? Some of their childrens names were:  Willie, Harley, Matthew, and Henry, there were serveral girls too, but I don't  know their names.    Enjoyed your homepage, will visit often.   Sincerely, Susan

Greg- You are a fantastic find! I've quickly "cruised" your web site and find that we are related several ways: 1. Strickland-Joel Joseph was my GGGGG GF via his Albritton and Thrift descendants (Sina, dau of Robert T., was my G GM Hickox). 2. Miller- William (1759-1837) was my GGGG GF via his Miller and Henderson descendants to Annie Eliza Henderson, my father's mother. 2. Bennett-William,R.S., (1760-1828) was my GGGG GF via his Bennett descendants to Nancy Ann, mother of Annie Eliza Henderson.I remember my G GM Nancy Ann Bennett well, she having spent much time at my Hickox (Harley and Annie) grandparents' home near Hoboken where I likewise spent much time as a young lad. Incidentally, I'm trying to establish the civil war record of her father John R.,as I vaguely recall her telling me that he was in the war.I've had no luck in the National Archives nor the Florida records (I believe they lived in Baker County at that time). Can you shed any light on that for me? Like you, I have gotten most of my initial genealogical info from the Huxford books and consider his work to be absolutely priceless. My current dead ends of most interest among our mutual ancestry are: 1.Berrien (Sweat) Henderson (1805-1881), A REAL ENIGMA! 2.Thomas Newbern,R.S., father of Thomas, Jr. (1770-1837). 3.Jacob Miller (from Germany to N.C.@1710). Incidentally, I got from the National Archives many years ago a copy of the statement of his grandson William, R.S.,regarding his service in the N.C. militia during the Revolution. Nothing grand, but interesting reading on what militia life was like in that time. 4. Amy Barker (1760-1831), William Miller's wife. 5. William Bennett, R.S., (1760-1828), plus associated Sheffield and Corbitt lines. 6. The Wilson line on Nancy Ann Bennett's mother's (Sarah) side. 7. John Albritton, R.S., (1750-1815),whose son Thomas married Joel Joseph Strickland's dau Mary Ann (Pollie). 8. Finally, any of the Dyess and associated Boyett, Smith and Platt lines other than the info already established in Huxford vols I-VII. FYI, a quick summary on me.I am the son of Oscar Jonathan and Mary Bell (Culbreth, of Waycross) Hickox. Born in Brunswick 10/6/39. Reared and educated in Glynn County, graduated from the Naval Academy, Annapolis MD. Spent 26 years in the navy doing ship engineering, retired in the rank of Captain, and am now living on the Northern Neck of Virginia, birth-place of George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and other early "prime movers" of our country and, incidentally, for a time the home of the ancestors of the south Georgia Thrift family. Many Thrifts reside here yet. It's a great place to live and a well-preserved piece of the Old South. Now that I'm "sort of" retired, maybe I can find the time to do a family tree web site like you have. Hope to hear from you.

William, Richard, James and John BENNETT pioneers of Southeast Georgia. Personally, my current best guess is that the common ancestor was John Bennett, who came over as an indentured servant to a plantation near Savannah. He worked off the indenture, then was granted land on the Midway (Medway) River. We know that he had five children at the time he received the grant (1754). That means there were a BUNCH of Bennetts in that area (Liberty and McIntosh counties). There are a fair number of records from Liberty county, but nothing from McIntosh. What we then know is that Richard and William begin to show up, in the 1700's, in the eastern part of the Appling/Effingham county area, and records show their gradual westward trek. This indicates to me that they MAY have started from the Midway River area, perhaps Sunbury, and gradually gone west. There was also a William Bennett, Sr., in Sunbury, who was at one time a marshall there. He was captured by the Brits during the Revolutionary war. That tells me that there were at least two Williams there in Georgia, not NC, during the Revolution. William, Sr., was part of the Sunbury militia. In other words, we've got a lot of Bennetts, at least a few named William and John, in that area. I'd guess that the group we are looking at were descended from at least one of them. Now James is different. He starts in Camden County, down on the Florida border, where he is married in 1790. Now let's put that one together... Robeson county in 1776, where he's a revolutionary war soldier, and then doesn't marry 'till 1790 and marries all the way down on the Florida border? Sorry, but while it's possible, it's highly unlikely. James then moves North - up to Bryan county and is there in the early 1800's. So for some reason, if he were brother to William and Richard, he decided to strike out on his own in a different direction. Also, once he hits Bryan county, the records reflect the presence of a John Bennett. However, the records are quite sketchy, and though there are one or two references indicating that a John was there, and that he was approximately the age of James (and James had a son, John), we cannot pinpoint John either. So my GUESS is that James and John were brothers. They MIGHT have been brothers to William and Richard, but who knows. There is very little interrelationship between the families. With the McIntosh county records gone, I've had very little luck in tracking down any relationships. Liberty county gives me a lot of data, but I don't think it has much to do with my Bennett line. And the search goes on........... regards, Jerry ([email protected])

Greg: I am researching the Crews side of my family.  My great  great grandfather was Archibald Graham Crews.  I show that he was born around 1820-23, and that he married Honor Civility Bradley, but no date.  Do you suppose that either Bradley or Purdom was a first or second wife? Do you have any further information on him?  I have his father and mother and his brothers and sisters.  I am more than willing to share what I have if it will help you. It seems strange that we'd both have Archibald in the same general time frame.  I show that he was  born in Georgia, his parents born in Colleton county, South Carolina. Please get back to me so we can compare notes. Who knows, we may be cousins! Your   wife doesn't happen to be Mary, does she?  In her mid to late 40s?  I used to work with a Mary Wainwright at Southern Bell in 1967-68. Anyway, thanks for being there. Iris

Hi Greg. I stumbled on to your wonderful site somehow by accident and yes, we're cousins, too. I come from the Benjamin WEEKS and Mary CHASE line. Argent O'STEEN's first husband was Josiah STAFFORD. Their daughter Belinda STAFFORD married a Duncan HENDERSON (1802-1863). They are my 4th great grandparents. They had a bunch of kids. John Tyler HENDERSON (1839-1923) married Mary GUEST, daughter of Miles Jackson GUEST of Pioneers of Wiregrass. I would love to find out more about the HENDERSON's, but I couldn't establish a connection to your tree. All of my family on this side is from southeast Georgia so I hope to find a connection. Also, one of my major dead ends is James Madison BROWN (1865-1902) who married John Tyler HENDERSON's daughter, Mary Elizabeth. James Madison BROWN died young and lived in Atkinson county. Any ideas? I am planning a research trip to south Georgia in the next couple of months. Does anyone know where I could get a good map which shows old cemeteries for Atkinson county? I need to find the Sweetwater Methodist Church, the Guest Millpond Cemetery, and Providence Primitive Baptist church. Any advice? Thanks for a great web page and best of luck to your family and little Olivia. We'll be thinking of her in Fayetteville, GA!

HI Greg I have been viewing your web page and I see that we we have several ancestors in common,to be specific Thomas Altman and William Sheffield. I would like to compare notes with you it seems that you are farther along than I am. It seems that there is never enough time to visit every where and to correlate and input all the info that you do collect. Thanks Andy Jacobs

I have a question that I was wondering if someone might know of the answer to. There was a Matilda Tatum that was one of the wives of Obediah Barber. She had a daughter named Mollie that I am told was fathered by a man named Strickland. Matilda was never married to this Strickland person.Mollie was said to have been born " out of wedlock". Matilda Tatum married Obediah Barber and he brought Mollie up as his own and she took his surname although Mollie was not a Barber by blood. Mollie was about 4 years old when her mother Matilda married Obediah. Mollie is related on my husbands side. I can go back a little on the Tatum side but am stumped on this Strickland side. My husbands grandfather is still living and he says that Mollie's father was indeed a Strickland. We have been told that there is an answer out there somewhere and that possibly a man that works at the Post Office in Waycross, Ga knows the answer.  Can anyone shed any light on this?? I found you family tree page from the Orangeburg newsgroup. I think I have a link on your Henry Charles Driggers line. I have been researching two different John Driggers families, one born about 1833 and the other about 1835. The John Driggers family of Ware County are the direct ancestors of a close friend. John Driggers born about 1835 married Treacy Griffin dau of William Griffin and Cynthia Strickland. Their son John D. Driggers born March 1863 married twice first Sallie (?) and had children Charlie Driggers and Treacy M. Driggers and second to Effie Mae Warren and had Kathleen Driggers, Irene Driggers, John Durwood Driggers III, Warren Vandy Driggers, Lloyd Walker Driggers and Pauline Driggers. The parents of John Driggers born 1835 has not been identified. His Wife was Treacy Griffin and they were married Feb 26 1856 in Bulloch Co. GA. This John is said to have died during the Civil War on Sept 20. 1862 before the birth of his son John D. Driggers. I find in Ware Co. Georgia 1900, 1910 and 1920 both John D. Driggers and Henry C. Driggers families. I had long thought these men were related but could not find the tie until I rechecked my census notes. I need to check the film again but In Ware Co. Georgia 1880 there are no DRIGGERS indexed for Ware Co. In my notes... listed with the Griffin families of Ware Co 1880 I had copied family 144/149 as GRIGER, Trucy age 50 with sons Jabe age 23, John age 18 and Henry age 9. I need to check the microfilm again but I think this is actually Treacy Driggers and that John and Henry are the Driggers later living in Ware Co. Treacy's birth date listed in 1900 census as June 1830 age 70 and indicates she had 7 children with 4 living. (She was living with John's family 1900) This disputes the birth date of Feb. 28, 1835 found your tree and I believe in Huxford's PWG. It also leads me to believe there may have been a Driggers Daughter older than the boys and married by 1880. Jabe Driggers (if I copied the name correctly) is not found in Ware 1900 and it appears that Henry C. Driggers may have a father other than the father of the older children If John died during the Civil War. Anyone with other thoughts or clues on this family? My Own Driggers line is a John Driggers born abt 1833 in Georgia who married Elizabeth Woods Feb 22, 1855 in Florida. I suspect the Driggers are related but have yet to find parents for either of these John Driggers. Hope someone else can use these clues. I will continue to check on this line next time I can read the microfilm census records. Candy [email protected]

I just started on the internet and found this page. My father was George Washington Wainright Jr. He grew up in the Nahunta area. He was born about 1923. His father was George Washington Wainright who was born somewhere around 1885 and had a farm near Nahunta. He died in the 1970s. My father had a brother Herbert and a sister Maxine who married a man named Drury. I don't know much about my family but would love contact from any of my relatives. My dad moved to Idaho in 1949 and I was born in 1952. I have three children. Thank you.

Greg; Did you get the files I sent you on the Lee-Lea-& Leigh's and have you been able to try anything together on our Mary Leigh and her sister. I have been to the Beaufort, County Court house, the Craven County court house, but have not been able to found some thing to try them together. As I live about 30 miles from both, and close to the land that the Leigh's had back in early 1710, I have a copy of the wills in regards to the land along the south side of the Pamlico River. Look my web site over and let me hear from you. Harry [email protected]

just looking for the wainwright connection for my wainwright ancestors. my great-great-grandfather was named walton wainwright and in about 1860-70 he lived in jackson co. miss.. he was married to a louise boone and they had twin sons, sidney and general lee. general lee was my great-grandfather. it is said that walton wainwright came from up north somewhere, but in southern miss. up north could have been anywhere. it seems that he was unhappy living in the south but his wife wouldn't leave her family to go north. so one day while walking with one of his sons, the boy said he was thirsty so walton sent him into a neighbors house for a drink and when the boy returned walton was gone never to be heard of again. that was about 1870. i have been trying to find any info about a walton wainwright htat may be my walton wainwright. at least the research has been fun. good luck in your search sylvia kubicek

Thomas Jefferson Collins, Sr. (my grandfather) was the son of Benjamin (James?) Collins (parents unknown; b. abt. 1859, d. 10 Sept. 1933 in Waycross, Ware, GA) who was married to Sarah Alberta Cox(dau. of James COX and Frances WILKINSON). Sarah Alberta Cox (the Sarah C. Cox listed in your files) b. 15 Jul 1862, Clinch Co., GA; d. 17 Jun 1919 in Waycross, Ware, GA. I have the names, birth dates, and most death dates of the children of Sarah Alberta COX and Benjamin COLLINS, but do not know if they are pertinent to your files. If I ever finish this Masters Degree I've been working on, I'll, hopefully, have time to get back to my genealogy passion.  Keep up the wonderful work you are doing.  It is such a valuable source!! Charles Wainwright

Apr 2, 1998 22:26

Gregg, I sent this to you via E-Mail, but after looking over your web site, I thought I would post it here as well. Nice web site. If I can be of any more help to you, please let me know. I have been doing research on 2 lines with the name Wainwright, one of which is my line. The first, and by far the more famous, is that of Francis Wainwright, who immigrated to Boston from Chelmsford, Essex, England in 1638, and later moved to Ipswich Mass where he started a prosporous fish business. His descendants were prominent in Essex County Mass until just before the Revolution, when the last person of that name, John, died. Check out Essex Institute Historical Collections for an excellent account of this family. Also, Essex County Probate records are loaded with wills from this family. My line begins with Thomas Wainwright, who was born in Portsmouth NH November 9 1766, the illigitimate son of Mary Wainwright and Thomas Thomas, a farmer from the countryside near Portsmouth. Thomas was raised in Rowley Mass, and served in the Revolutionary Militia from that town in 1780 (4th Massachusetts Regiment). I have been unable to find much background on Thomas' mother Mary. However, I have a theory that there were three sisters- Mary, Hannah, and Mehitable, who were each farmed out as laborors in farms in the Portsmouth area. Hannah appears in Rowley Mass in Selectmans records of 1761 and again in Gloucester Mass in 1790 at the same time as Thomas Wainwright is married to Lydia Lurvey. Mehitable appears in the wills of Richard Wiberd (1733) and his wife Elizabeth (1742-3) of Portsmouth as a maidservant. Mehitable later married the man who would become the first Governer of New Hampshire, Meshech Weare and settled in Hampton, New Hampshire. I did find some evidence of another Thomas Wainwright living in the "South End" of Portsmouth, New Hampshire from Land Tax records of 1764-1767. In the record of 1768, the notation "dead" is next to his name. I can tell you that I am quite sure that between the two lineages of Wainwright that I have researched, my son and I are the only remaining males with the Wainwright name. I am planning to publish both geneologies on the Family Tree site soon. The only thing holding me back is that I have not completely documented my sources. I am doing this now as I have time. I hope this helps. Good luck with your search. Charlie Wainwright

Apr 20, 1998 14:50

Hello Greg, This is Layton Robinson in Huntsville, Texas I last posted a message in March of this year I thought I would write and let everyone know that I now have a reprint of a 1932 copy of the book "History of charlton County" by Alex S. McQueen This book has some family histories in it. I was looking for information about N.F. (Fred) Robinson and Lottie Altman. According to the book Lottie Altman was a daughter of Jacob Altman She married N.F. Robinsonon July 11, 1877. Her sister Levicy was married to James E. Robinson July 8, 1874. N.F. (Fred) & James E. Robinson were brothers. Their father was Robert Robinson I believe Robert's father to be James Robinson (RS). The book says that Roberts father James had 19 children 10 sons and 9 daughters. It also states that Robert Robinson was elected sheriff Jan. 20, 1877 and served three terms and that N.F. (Fred) Robinson his son was sheriff Jan. 13, 1885. The book also says that N.F. Robinson was murdered and is buried in the Sardis cemetery. I have no d.o.b. on the folks that are listed here. There is a list of surnames In the book from Altman to Zarfos. If anyone would like for me to research the book concerning their names I will be more than happy to do so. All you have to do is send a request via e-mail. Maybe this can help with some of the names on the family tree research. Thanks. Layton Robinson [email protected]

Hi, I loved your web page, especially the diagram tree of the early Strickland family.  I am trying to prove a line that another researcher gave me.  I'm supposed to be descended from Matthew Strickland and Anne Braswell of Wake Co., NC.  Their son , Jacob Strickland md. Lucretia Pitts, then had Solomon Strickland who md. Amy Pace.  Solomon may be the father of my ancestor Jane 'Jennie' Strickland who married a Wiley Jones Bridges (whose parents were also from Wake Co., NC) later moving to North GA..  Thanks for all the work you did on your page. Greg, If my memory is correct I think it was when I was in fourth grade in 1949 when I first saw the Goatman.  He came to Manor, Ware County, Georgia in a covered wagon type vehicle; it was pulled by goats which were in pairs.  The wagon had pots and pans and other things hanging from it.  He offered us goat milk and goat cheese but none of us kids nor grown-ups took any while I was there.  I remember petting the goats and how my hand smelled afterwards.  He told us that goats did not really eat tin cans and that that was just a rumor. He said that goats made good pets and were very useful animals.  He had names for each of them.  I remember how he loved the goats and liked to talk to us about them. He had parked his wagon between my Uncle Alvin Boyd's gas station and general store and Mr. Fred Ammons' automobile repair garage, just across from the Methodist Church.  It was a little wooded area of pine trees and wild bushes with a tiny stream.  I believe he stayed overnight at the "tent show grounds" nearby which belonged to "Miss" Georgia Lee on the Swamp Road which led to Uncle Hamp Mizell's on Suwanne Lake.  This show ground had two outdoor toilets and the traveling shows always stayed here, so I just assume he stayed there as well. He seemed like an old man to me and it may have been due to his full beard and moustache.  He was wearing dark clothes and had on a big hat. All of his possessions were inside that wagon. He was very kind to us and he left Manor heading toward Waycross.  He would return every once in a while.  I had forgotten about him until I read about the Goat Woman in the book, Cold Mountain, and suddenly these memories of him came back. Does anyone know who he was or where he came from or where he went on these trips?  Or what finally happened to him?  Was this some kind of Southern happening or did this kind of thing take place in other regions of the country as well? Thank you for the chance to recall a childhood memory, Greg. Christopher Boyd

What a great site!! I am looking for the ancestors of my great-grandparents, William M. SWEAT (b. 3-28-1838; d. 6-19-1915) and Mary Ann INMAN (b. 1841; d. 1920). I know they lived for some period in Wayne County, but they may also have had family in Brantley, Ware, and/or Pierce Counties (maybe near Blackshear). According to the 1880 Wayne County Census, they had seven children: James (1859), Barto (1861), Eugenia (1864), Charles (1869), Emma (1872), Willie (1876), and Hansel "Bailey" Sweat (1878). I think there also was a later daughter named Ethel (?). Hansel Bailey SWEAT was my grandfather. He married Lillie Pauline KING of Kingsland (Camden County). My mother was their daughter. Any help with the SWEAT or INMAN lineage would be greatly appreciated.

ADAM BOSS practiced dentistry in all three areas prior to his death. He and Mary Ann, his wife, are buried in Russell County, AL. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know in case you needed any info, I am the Granddaughter of George Washington Wainright Jr and Daughter of Richard Allen Wainright. I was born 08/01/78. My full name is Carly Kristin Wainright. I have two older brothers Richard Allen Wainright, Jr (10/08/72) and Joshua Marc Wainright (09/30/74). It's nice to see that someone knows all about our family. I don't know much farther then my great grandfather and would love to learn more. Your children are beautiful. By the picture of your great-grandfather Wainright, I would say we are related somehow. He looks just like my grandfather.
