Southeast Georgia
Non-White Ancestry

http://www.freeafricanamericans.com
This is an interesting site concerning this topic. Some of the information may surprise some Southeast Georgia researchers. The mixed-race ancestry of several families who are now considered "white" in the region is discussed in the Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina section. The Gibson, Rawlinson(Raulerson), Sweat, Driggers and Pendarvis families are just a few of the ones mentioned that trace to Southeast Georgia. I'm not so sure that "some" of those listed as mulatto were Native American-only and really shouldn't be listed as free "African Americans", although I am sure that many of these did have African roots. How one knows for sure at this point, I don't know. From some of the reading I've done, it seems that free non-whites (of African origins) and Native Americans tended to live in the same parts of communities and quite a bit of  intermarrying did take place. I think it is more than a coincidence that the surnames of Southeast Georgia families that were listed as Mulatto in census' are listed on this site.

PBS did this Frontline series on a few of these same families at   concerning "blurred racial lines".  Other Southern families covered are: Staffords, Locklear, Pendarvis Drigger, Galphin, Fairfaxes, Greenstead, Johnson, Timrod and Darnall.
