Why was it called kadalai..
When our gr8 and gud old ppl started callin it kadalai. they shd hv had some thin in mind..
kadalaiyena peyar varak kaaranam yenna??(ippadi 5th std bukla varavaavathu) we shd wrk hard.. and find the meanins..
so many meanings.

1) kadalai varukkirravan sattiya thattikittae iruppaan anaa sattila onnum irukkaathu.. athumaari kadalai poduravanga pesikittae iruppaanhga (this will attract attention of others) but ulla paatha vishayam onnum irukkaathu..
this was the most reasonable reason i got..
2) beasant nagar beachla kadalai saapittukitae pottathaal kadalai.. this was another meanin..
3) kadalai is a sort of plant which flowers outside but none knows where its seeds r ..'coz they r inside...

The basic concept of the origin of the word Kadalai comes from the sea. In the south Indian language of Tamil, the sea wave is called Kadal Alai. A phonetic concatenation of these words would give us Kadalai. That is, Kadal + Alai = Kadalai.
Now, at the same time, it was found that most of the people of TamilNadu went to the beach to flirt. That was their basic hangout. On research it was also found that these couples who flirt, generally buy groundnuts from the boys selling the same on the beach. Hence, the forefathers of the land of Tamilnadu decided to dedicate both a noun and a verb towards the sea waves (kadalai)

when i got to this discussion it was already dead.. but i thought i should share my views on how kadalai came to be called as kadalai....
but before we go ahead and discuss the origin of the word kadalai.. we need to understand what does "kadalai podrathu mean..."
well in the normal sense... wherer kadalai is "groundnut"... when do people eat groundnuts... nice illustratio in a tamil movie.. i am not able to recollect the name.. but in that movie.. pratap walks from him office to his wifes office to pick her up.. and on the way he eats kadalai.. so why does he eat kadalai.. to kill time.. or to timepass....
so people put(eat) kadalai(ground nut) to time pass...
so it was just an analogy.. and then became famous...
so i feel its really that simple...; just my humble views... :-)
