Reading aloud is a valueable activity in a child's language development. Parents should instill in children the desire to read. Children learn from imitation. They will imitate their parent's behaviour and attitudes towards reading. If parents are avid readers and enjoy reading aloud to children, they will follow suit. Parents who set aside a special time for reading aloud daily, can motivate their children to read aloud too. Children's Imagination is awakened during read-aloud sessions.

Young children treasure the warm and loving moments with parents during the read-aloud sessions. This may be  the only quality time some children have with their busy parents. Children will cuddle up or sit on the laps of their parents, and listen to a story. This promotes a positive and loving relationship between parents and children. As the child enjoys the attention he gets from a busy parent he develops self-worth. This quality time activity cannot be replaced by television or computer programmes.

Selection of Books.
 

• There must be lots of illustrations in the books.

• Stories about large animals, children, family members and neighbours are good.

• Books should contain clear and good characters where children could learn much from them.

• Books must have good moral values and parents can explain the morals in a story.

• It is better to ask the child what he likes and parents can decide if the book is suitable.

• Books should support equal opportunities among young boys and girls, race and culture.

How to Read Aloud to Children
 

• Select a routine reading time, such as after dinner or before bedtime.

• Work out how long the reading time would be.

• Start with picture books first and later move up to stories and novels.

• Allow time for the child to make responses to the story.

• Use lots of expressions when reading and show interest.

• Enjoy the session with the child.
