Notes on my training on the 5th June

Starting basal rate Starting BG BG1 (time) BG2 (time) BG3 (time) Ending BG Carbs during walk
.2 units for 1 hour 11.0 10.0 (40 min) -- -- 9.3 0g

I began walking at 7.30pm, 10 minutes after reducing my basal. I had had a very mixed bag for tea an hour previously: a tomato cup of soup, two oatcakes, a 3 egg omlette with peppers and scallions, and a bag of popcorn. I had only 1.5 units for this (I was at 5.7 just before eating). I learned two things: it really is a good idea for me to wait 15 minutes before I eat so my humalog can take effect, and oatcakes, popcorn, and cups of soup will raise my BGs quite quickly.

Insulin details

My usual basal rate at this time is .3 units per hour (it changed over the weekend from .4 units per hour). I set a temporary basal rate of .2 units when I began exercising. It's generally recommended that you halve your basal rate before exercise, and do so 15 minutes to a half hour beforehand. In retrospect I should have left my basal insulin at .3 units, or waited til a half hour after walking to cut it to .2 units, because my BG was so high. I thought I would end up with a lower ending BG because, after the 10.0 mmol test, I walked faster to try to lower my BG. It didn't really work. I should have had more insulin at tea time, and thereby started walking with a better BG.

Carbs during exercise

I didn't eat any carbohydrate for this exercise, and that was a refreshing change! Despite the higher BGs, I still felt good at the end of my walk, so I didn't miss my exercise carbs at all.

For those of you who know Dublin...

It wasn't a very exciting walk, but I covered 8.1k in an hour and 20 minutes. I'm very pleased about that: I don't see why I wouldn't finish the marathon in two hours or less.

I walked up Skelly's Lane in Beaumont, past Artaine Castle and up to the Malahide Road, where I turned right. I walked down to Fairview, crossed the road, and walked back up again. Then I turned left down Collins Avenue. According to the odometer on the car, Collins Avenue is only 1.5k between Malahide Road and Beaumont Road. However, it's definitely part of the Twilight Zone, because it is, unquestionably, the longest stretch of road in the entire world. I turned right onto Beaumont Road to escape the Twilight Zone, and went straight up Skelly's Lane and home again. Not inspiring, but a good workout nonetheless.
