I began walking at 7.40pm, 10 minutes after reducing my basal. An hour previously, I had 250g of organic raspberry yogurt. This would normally require 2 units of insulin, but I took only one unit. My starting BG was higher than my target, so the next time I'll have 1.5 units for the yogurt. I'm very impressed with myself overall: I walked over 11km in 2 hours and 10 minutes.
My usual basal rate at this time is .4 units per hour. I set a temporary basal rate of .2 units when I began exercising. It's generally recommended that you halve your basal rate before exercise, and do so 15 minutes to a half hour beforehand. I lowered my basal only 10 minutes before walking, but I had all that yogurt, and not enough insulin to cover it. I think this kept me steady for quite a long time.
I ate a total of 39.2g of carb during this exercise. It's much more than I want to have to eat, and I didn't need those last 7g, but I was being safe. In my next session, I'll turn the pump down to .1 units per hour and see what happens. I'm aware that this may be too little insulin and my BGs might rise dramatically. But if I don't try it, I'll never know!
I walked from Clonskeagh to Beaumont, roughly 11.8km. I walked through Ranelagh, down Grafton Street, and up Talbot Street to Fairview. I went left down Richmond Road, because when I reached Fairview I got this insane idea that Grace Park Road would be shorter than the Malahide Road. Instead, my route was half a kilometre longer. And Grace Park Road is steeper than Malahide Road.
I paid for my folly: a van driving too fast and too close to the kerb soaked me by driving through water sitting on a blocked drain. Grace Park Road, never again!
Despite the drenching, and stuck-together wrappers on my sherbert lemons, I walked 11.8km in two hours and ten minutes, so I'm on target for 10k in two hours during the mini marathon.
