Training for the Dublin Women's Mini Marathon: Notes on training, 19th May

Notes on my training on the 19th May

I began walking at 5.20pm, and finished at 6.45pm. For those of you who know Dublin, I walked from Clonskeagh to the GPO in O'Connell Street, via Grafton Street, which I estimated at 5.2 km.

Insulin details

My usual basal rate at this time is .4 units per hour. I set a temporary basal rate of .2 units 15 minutes before I began exercising. It's generally recommended that you halve your basal rate before exercise, and do so 15 minutes to a half hour beforehand.

I also had .7 units of a meal bolus remaining in my system when I started walking.

Carbs during exercise

I ate a total of 19.4g just before and during this exercise. I ate a ryvita before starting (for 5.4g), and two sherbert lemons during the walk, which were 7g each.

I also stopped briefly three times along the way - to buy sherbert lemons because I left with no glucose tabs or other fast acting carbohydrate, and to speak to some people I knew.

I was very proud of myself when I tested at the end of my walk and found my blood sugar differed by only .1 mmol/l. If only it were always like this!
