History
Sonora Smart Dodd had been raised by her father, William Smart, after her mother had died. One day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909, she was inspired by the thought of a Father's Day to let her father know how special he was to her. William Smart had made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of Sonora, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day on the 19th of June, 1910. this first Father's Day took place in Spokane, Washington.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
