"Colonel?"
Jack stirred and slowly opened his eyes, focusing on the concerned face of Janet Frasier.
"Yeah?" He straightened in the chair and rubbed his eyes, embarrassed at having fallen asleep.
"Perhaps you should go home, sir. There's nothing you can do here," the doctor pointed out quietly.
His dark eyed gazed shifted from her to the still form of his friend, shocked to find Daniel's normally bright blue eyes, now dulled by drugs staring back at him, no sign of recognition shining in their depths.
"They're preparing to transport him sir." Janet shrugged slightly when Jack's stunned gaze jumped from Daniel to her, with the sudden realization, McKenzie and several aides were standing nearby.
"C'mon, McKenzie, this isn't necessary! He can stay here! You can-"
Shaking his head, McKenzie motioned him aside. "You're not his doctor, O'Neill!"
"At least I give a damn about him!...For cryin' out loud! Aren't you rushing this a bit?!"
"Jack?" He whirled at the sound of his name, stepping closer to the bed. Jack squelched his natural instinct to reach out to his friend, afraid Daniel's reaction would only worsen the situation. So he stood next to the bed, his sad brown eyes expressing his support.
"I'm not crazy Jack...At least I-I don't think I am...I don't feel crazy...Jack, do I look like...I'm...crazy?" Worry furrowing Daniel's brow beneath his short mussed hair. "Maybe....maybe I'm having a reaction to-to...something. Maybe...something from the last mission to..." Panic momentarily flared in his eyes at the inability to remember the planet designation. "Maybe it's just a nervous breakdown...I mean seeing Hathor again...and...and..." His voice trailed off, not elaborating. "Is there a chance it's just-just stress catching up with me?" O'Neill fought his own tears as the blue eyes begged him for a positive response.
"Maybe...I just don't know, Danny," he finally admitted.
"Make them understand, Jack....I'm not crazy!....You know me, Jack, you know me....I'm not crazy!....I'm not!"
Jack grit his teeth, to stop his quivering chin as he fought the feeling of helplessness surging through him. This was Daniel, hurt, scared and looking to his best friend for answers. Answers Jack didn't have. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see McKenzie angerily motioning him aside.
"Listen to me, Daniel....I'll do everything I can. We'll find an answer I promise!." Jack leaned forward, meeting Daniel's steady gaze, pointedly ignoring the psychiatrist, lowering his voice reassuringly. "Look, the asshole says I have ta get outta here now but I'll be by to see you real soon. You understand? Carter and Teal'c too. Do whatever it takes, but you hang in there....Understand me, Danny....You hang in there....That's an order, Daniel!...Don't you dare give up!"
Visably crestfallen, tears welled in Daniel's eyes as he slowly nodded.
His steps dragging, Jack moved to the door, aware of McKenzie following him into the corridor.
"Colonel, I don't know what you think you were doing in there, but it would be best if you stay clear of Dr. Jackson from now on!"
"What?!" O'Neill's dark eyes flared. "What the hell are you talking about! Daniel is not only a member of my team, he's my friend and I'll be damned if I'm gonna desert him when he needs me!"
"You're just feeding his delusions and I believe it would be in his best interests if you-"
"Delusions? Did you hear him? Were you even listening in there? I mean that is your job isn't it? He was lucid and as rational as you. There's nothing wrong with him!" Jack wanted so badly to wipe the look of superiority off the psychaitrist's face he had to take a step back.
"Just because you don't want anything to be wrong, doesn't make it so, Colonel O'Neill. Now if you'll excuse me..."
"Wait just a damn minute!" Jack started after him, freezing in the doorway as Daniel jumped from the bed, screaming in panic. Pushing aside medical equipment with terror induced strength, he scrambled barefoot across the cold floor to cower in a corner. A horrified expression twisted his face as he once again pointed to something only he could see.
"Daniel," Jack pushed past the aides before they could reach the man huddled in the corner. "C'mon Danny....you're just making it worse," he whispered hoarsely as the scientist cringed, tears streaming from his anxiety filled blue eyes.
At McKenzie's order, the burly aides shoved Jack aside.
Shrieking hysterically, Daniel fought, his arms and legs flailing wildly, but his slight size was no match as they roughly threw him to the floor, holding him down long enough to restrict his movements with the use of a strait jacket.
Feeling as if he were suddenly paralyzed, Jack's eyes moved from Frasier to McKenzie to the men forcefully struggling with his screaming friend. "Damnit, McKenzie! They don't have to hurt him!"
"Colonel, why don't you go do...whatever...it is you do around here and let me do what I do."
"You sanctimonious son of a bitch!!" Jack's anger exploded into a raging dangerous fire. "If you hurt him, I'll-"
"What?!...What will you do, O'Neill? Report me to the AMA? I might be the only hope that man has so I suggest you stay the hell out of my way and let me do my job!" He motioned to the aides who bodily dragged the still struggling scientist from the room. He turned to Jack again, his tone bitterly condescending. "And Colonel, remember what I said. I don't want you or any of your team near Dr. Jackson again, agitating him further. " With a quick nod to Fraiser, he followed his patient from the room.
