Daniel wished he had his glasses so he could survey his surroundings. The ache in his head and the fact his eyesight seemed worse than normal even without his glasses led him to believe he was probably suffering from a concussion. Concentrate Daniel. What is it Jack is always yapping about when they were out in the field. Assess the situation. Weigh your options. Look for a solution. Trying to appear casual, he glanced around counting his adversaries. Three by the fire. Probably two standing guard. Five. Hayes made six and he was pretty sure that the man who'd led him out of the cave was somewhere behind him which was seven. Flickering lights from individual campfires in the hillside told him the compound seemed to have been set up in a series of caves that surrounded the clearing, much as the Peublo indians had done.
"So how did you guys happen to end up here?" If he could keep Hayes talking it might give him time to think. "I'm sure even with this headache, I'd remember if we were missing any members of the SGC."
"Why in hell would you think we had anything to do with that piss ant operation?"
"Didn't you say you were a member of the Air Force? And you do seem to know alot about the Stargate." Comprehension dawned with the jagged lightening that streaked across the sky. "My God, you worked for Mayborne didn't you?"
"You really are pretty smart doc." He recovered quickly but Daniel had seen the startled look on the captain's face. "But-" Daniel quickly closed his mouth. Was it possible these men didn't know that Mayborne's operation had been shut down. It might be better for him if they didn't find out.
"But what?"
"Nothing."
"Come on doc, we're having a nice civilized conversation here. An exchange of information you might say." An evil glint suddenly appeared in Hayes's eyes. "You really don't want to see me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
"I don't particularly like you now." 'God had he actually said that aloud?' "You haven't answered my question about how you ended up here."
"You got moxy doc. I like that!" Hayes laughter filled the night. "Fair enough. We were setting up a second base of operation...sort of a back up. We'd been here about a month when Anderson suddenly had an accident and died on us. You might say he was our version of you. I gated back to base but it was empty. Everything gone. Basically with Anderson dead and no one left at the base we've been more or less stranded here. Now what can you tell me about that?"
"Why didn't you just pick an address at random?"
"And possibly end up on a rock worse than this one or maybe in a Gou'ald stronghold? You used the words 'worked for Mayborne' so obviously this operation has somehow been compromised."
"Shut down is more accurate." Daniel shrugged. "It's over, finished, kapoot." He felt as if Jack had suddenly taken over his body. "You know end of the line sort of stuff. The Asgard returned all the stolen articles and Mayborne's people have all been arrested...except for you guys that is." His words were followed by a lengthy and very uncomfortable silence.
"Well that explains alot." Daniel suddenly felt like a deer caught in headlights as Hayes cold eyes raked over him. "I suppose you and the rest of SG-1 had something to do with that."
"You suppose wrong." He bluffed, forcing himself to meet the other man's steady gaze. Hopefully playing poker with Jack would finally pay off. Actually it wasn't exactly a lie. SG-1 hadn't been involved but he wasn't about to tell Hayes it was Jack's charade that had led his cohorts into a trap.
"Okay doc. You get a good night's sleep cause first thing in the morning, you're gonna take us to a brand new home." Hayes clapped him on the shoulder, a friendly gesture that became threatening as he gripped Daniel's neck, his large hand tightening. "You're gonna take us to a nice little planet that's starting to advance in technology but who's inhabitant's are just primitive enough to accept us for the Gods they think come through the gate." Ignoring the fingers biting into his neck and shoulders, disregarding the insanity clearly shining in Hayes' eyes, Daniel repeated one of Jack's favorite phrases. One he once stated to Heur'ur
. "I don't think so."
Jack paced the the embarkation room impatiently rechecking his equipment for what seemed the hundredth time
. "What the hell are we waiting for?"
"They're rechecking the data sir." Carter stated, adjusting the strap of her weapon. The information coming in from PXJ737, revealed that while the storms had abated for the moment, it was still raining. Although the original data had indicated no intelligent life, they now knew different and were using the MALP to sweep the area so that if at all possible, the would be rescuers didn't walk into a trap.
"Everyone knows the drill. As soon as we're through the gate, Ferretti you and SG-2 fan out to the left, we'll take the right. Keep your eyes open and stay alert."
"SG-1 and 2 you have a go." Hammond announced over the loudspeaker. "Good luck."
"Alright campers let's go get Daniel."
"Bring our boy home." General Hammond said to no one in particular, watching the teams disappear into the event horizon.
