Betrayal of Trust

Continued....

"Jack, remember the first time we were here. Meelay said we were the first people they'd ever met who traveled through the gate, and we've seen absolutely no sign of the Goa'uld so how would she know about a Jaffa's symbiote? She also knew he wasn't from earth." Daniel swallowed hard. "She knew about Shau're...the fact that she wasn't from earth either and that the Goa'uld had-"

"Okay," Jack quickly interrupted, aware of how hard it was for Daniel to talk about Shau're's death, "is it possible she's a Goa'uld?"

"Sam would have picked up on it."

"Maybe these spirits she's talking to are actually Goa'uld." Jack's eyes swept the area, an uneasiness creeping over him.

"She said she's never seen the spirits in human form."

"So she's lying!" Exasperation in every word, O'Neill threw his hands up as if to say, 'It's as simple as that.'

"I don't think so Jack. Remember I told you how important honesty was in Native American cultures.Your word-"

"Daniel in case you've forgotten, we're not on earth, we're on P...something or other and-"

"But if these people and their culture originated on earth then the principle is still the same. Their integrity is everything. If you were caught in a lie no one ever believed you again. You were essentially ostercized."

"Then explain how she might have known these things."

"Psychic...telepathic...I don't know!" Five years earlier, O'Neill might have scoffed at the idea of someone being psychic or telepathic but five years ago he hadn't traveled through a wormhole in space, taken on an ancient Egyptian claiming to be a god, met a race of people who could make things invisable with a wave of their hand, had his mind filled with the knowledge of the Ancients or blown up two Goa'uld ships hell bent on destroying earth.

Brown eyes met blue, two minds full of questions for which neither of them had answers.

"For now we'll keep a close watch on her," was the only solution Jack could come up with.

"Tell General Hammond, we'll report back in, as soon as we have some kind of time line. According to Daniel, we could be talking for at least another week or so." Jack and Teal'c both turned as Daniel approached surrounded by children of all ages, each vying for his attention. "He looks like the damned Pied Piper!" O'Neill couldn't prevent the smile that spread across his face as the children suddenly fell silent listening intently to whatever Jackson was saying before scampering away.

Whether it was charisma, naivety, or that little boy lost charm, there was something about the scientist that drew people to him like Spike Lee to a Knicks game and eventually Daniel managed to worm his way into the hardest heart. "What is this Pied Piper?"

"A story character who supposedly rid a town of rats by...never mind I'll get you the book when we get home."

"Regular rats or ones on steriods?" Teal'c met Jack's open-mouthed stare with his usual passivity. Then his lips curving in a slight smile as he nodded to Daniel and taking his staff weapon began the journey to the Stargate.

"Ready?" With a quick glance at the Jaffa's retreating back, Jack automatically trailed after Daniel. When they returned from lake, Shelaya had been waiting with their breakfast and the news that Meelay wished to speak with Jack and Daniel in two of their earth hours. Sam had happily followed Shelaya who keeping her promise to Daniel, offered to give her samples and explain the different uses of her plants, with instructions from Jack to find out how to make that hangover juice, teasing that "With the right marketing, we could make enough money to support the Stargate program."
