Betrayal of Trust

Continued....

How was it that this woman whom he'd just met the previous day spoke of emotions he'd only shared with Jack. He knew Sam and Teal'c were aware of his feelings; knew that Teal'c still blamed himself not only for Shau're's death but for putting her in a position of danger to begin with, but it was Jack, his best friend that he talked to. It was Jack who without fail was there when Daniel needed him whether to save his butt from a goa'uld system lord or just to listen.

"I must go." She rose gracefully to her feet and without hesitation Daniel followed.

With a groan, Jack stumbled from the tent, his head pounding as steadily as the drums the night before. Squinting against the bright sunlight, he considered returning inside but found himself accepting the cup of coffee, Teal'c shoved into his shaking hands.

"Morning sir. Ready for breakfast?" His stomach churned at the very thought of food.

"Why do you look so chipper?" He growled at his second in command. O'Neill knew she had drunk as much as he had yet here she sat munching on some native concoction, looking as refreshed as if she'd slept for two days. It didn't seem quite fair that whatever that drink was made of didn't affect women...at least not blonde, blue eyed Air Force majors. Jack automatically did a head count, not failing to notice he was missing one shaggy haired archeologist.

"Where's Daniel?"

"Daniel Jackson went to the lake several hours ago." Teal'c informed him. Hours? Was he the only one affected by the native's moonshine?

"Great coffee!" With each gulp, the hammering in his head lessened, his hands steadied and his stomach began to settle.

"Shelaya brought something she called Lagoda juice. Said it would help with the illness after the drink." Carter grinned. "We put it in the coffee."

"Are you nuts?!" Jack stared at the cup in his hand as if it were about to bite him. "Damn Carter! Is Daniel rubbing off on you?! It could be poison for all you know!"

"I think she knew we might think that so she drank some herself...in front of us."

"Maybe we should go find Daniel. He's probably sick as a dog or sleeping it off under some tree."

"Daniel Jackson was not ill when he left." Teal'c pointed out.

"And I'm not sleeping it off under some tree either." Daniel announced joining his teammates. "God Jack you look terrible."

"Thanks...How come you didn't need this...hangover juice?" Never a drinker, Daniel didn't like beer and usually never had more than a couple of drinks when the team went out.

"I guess I just hold my liquor better than most people." Taking a deep breath, Daniel kept his expression impassive for a total of ten seconds before bursting into laughter. "Actually, it's a trick I learned on Abydos. You sip the drink every so often, and while distracting the others with conversation, pour it out."

"Grass got drunk instead of you!...Sweet." Jack finished the coffee and poured another cup as Sam spooned him up a plate of food. "So where have you been all morning?"

"Talking to Shelaya." Three sets of eyebrows rose slightly at his answer.

Daniel had followed Shelaya to her home. Although her tent stood near the smallest of the wooden shelters, it was slightly apart from the rest of the village. Handing him the basket she motioned for him to enter the building and told him she'd be right there.

Inside was filled with plants, roots and leaves in various stages of drying giving the building an earthy scent. Two tables were covered tools, baskets and bowls of mixtures. Shelaya rejoined him carrying several small leather pouches.

"Shelaya, there are many things I don't understand; may I ask you some questions?" Knowing it was easier for her, Daniel chose to speak her language.

"Of course Daniel Jackson."

"Daniel." Out of habit, he touched his chest. "Just call me Daniel. You said you were attempting to learn our language...How?"

"I have listened to you many times."

"Excuse me?...Okay...okay...start with something easier...Umm....you were waiting for us when we arrived but I didn't see where you had been camping...how long had you been there?"

"The sun was just above the mountains when we arrived."

"How did you know when we would arrive?"

"The spirits told me." The statement was made as simply as if she were commenting on the weather as she bunched the leaves, and binding them with leather, hung them to dry.

"You're a shaman...uh...medicine woman....I thought Bannock-"

"Bannock is my teacher...I will take his place when he goes to the land of the spirits."

"What did you mean when you said you had listened to us many times?"

"The spirits brought you to me while I slept so that I may learn your speech. I had thought it was so you and I could communicate but that cannot be. Now I must wait for them to show me the reason."

While she worked, crushing dried plants, mixing potions, filling the bags with different powders, she continued to talk. Shelaya agreed to describe the plants and their uses to Carter. She explained how the spirits had come to Bannock's dreams to tell him of her birth, several years before she was conceived. They revealed that she was the one chosen to take his place among the people. She spoke of how the spirits had visited her dreams from the time she was old enough to speak. She asked several general questions about the Jack, Sam and Teal'c as well as earth. Nothing that Daniel considered beyond the scope of normal curiousity or that might breach earth's security.

"I don't remember seeing you or Bannock the first time we visited Apakia."

"I arrived just after you had returned home." She smiled. "I came of age just before the last season of white rain having seen seventy seasons. Bannock took his place at the temple. He lives there so he may greet the spirits if they choose to visit in our form."

"How long has it been since the spirits took your form." His mind reeled that the woman they thought to be under twenty was over three times that age, Daniel thought it best not to mention that if Ra was their Sun Spirit, he and Jack had made sure he wouldn't be returning.

"I have never seen the spirits in our form." Shelaya sighed. "Do the men on your world also carry the children?" "I'm sorry?...I-"

"Warrior Teal'c carries a child in him does he not?"

"Well...sort of...he carries a larvea Goa'uld." Although he'd never thought of it in that manner, she was right. Wouldn't Jack get a kick out of that. Teal'c pregnant! The temple! That was it! What he couldn't put his finger on. Meelay had mentioned a temple being built for the Sun Spirit. For Ra! "Shelaya...umm...I would like to learn as much as possible about your people and your ways...Would it be possible to visit Bannock at the temple?"

"In time...you will see the temple." Images of her visions flashed unbidden through her mind and Shelaya had to concentrate to stop the shiver that rushed through her body. "We must go. Your friends wait for you. Perhaps we can talk again when I bring your evening meal."

"Of course but you don't have to cook for us Shelaya, we're used to doing for ourselves."

"It is an honor given me by Bannock." Her smile was genuine yet it didn't remove the hint of sadness in her eyes. " I do the bidding of the spirits."
