| THE HEWIT MANSION When I was a little girl my mother worked as a landscaper and gardener for a nice old woman named Mrs. Hewit who lived in a huge mansion in the woods near my home. It was very old and had a long history, so I'll tell you a few of the experiences we've had while my mother was working there. My mom told me this first story: Once while Mrs. Hewit had gone on vacation and all the maids and such had already gone home, it was only my mom and another worker left in the house. Then my mom and the other worker heard a woman singing from somewhere on the other side of the house near the big spiral stair-case. At first they thought someone had left a radio on or something but when they thought about it no one had and no one else was there with them. They decided to leave as soon as possible. When they asked Mrs. Hewit about it later she told them that a woman who once lived there a long time ago had fallen down the stairs and died. She had always loved to sing. Another experience in that house was involving the same long, white carpeted spiral stair-case. When I was very young I used to play on those stairs with my little sister and one day while we were playing I looked down and saw this blonde lady wearing a long white dress lying at the bottom of the stairs. At the time I didn't know about my mom's experience with the singing lady and didn't know what to think. I went over to tell my sister but when we looked back at it, she was gone. Being real little I soon forgot about it and didn't really think about until my mother told me a few years later about what happened to her. Then once about a year later I was looking out one of the upstairs windows and saw children playing in the backyard. So I ran downstairs and when my mom asked me where I was going I said "I'm going out back to play with the other kids!" and before she could say anything I was out the door. But when I got there, the was absolutely no one there. Almost every day we went there I would look out that window and see children playing in the yard, but as soon as I got out back to see them they were gone. Pretty soon I stopped going out after them and just sat there and watched them. All I really remember about them was that they were always dressed in old style clothes like from the 1800's and that every time I would go up there to the window to watch them they always did the exact same things and played the exact same games every time. Pretty soon I started getting scared of the children outside, beginning to think they were ghosts (which I now know they were) and stopped going up to the window. Another thing that happened at that house while I was still little... they had an in-ground pool out on the side of the mansion and every once in a while I would just catch a glimpse of this little boy with short brown hair wearing red swim shorts. It turns out that a little boy who used to live there drowned in that pool not long ago. In fact; I think he was related to Mrs. Hewit. Well, thanx for listening to my stories. But remember this: if you live in or not far from Rock Island, Illinois you don't live far from the old Hewit Mansion... Submitted From: Sarah, IL, USA |

| ROCK LSLAND'S famous 'SHOVELING GHOST' first made its apperance in April of 1916, when residents of a row house reported the apparition of a skeleton digging a hole in their backyard. This hard working ghost left behind shallow holes with dirt neatly piled near-by. In 1917, a group of residents dug up the yard to look for burried treasure, but all they found was a few worthless trinkets. The ghost, however, is still digging.32 DEGREE |
Rock Island - The Villa - The Villa, back in the early 1900's The Villa was a school for girls, like dormitories. The Villa was a Catholic School. The legend has it that the priests would have intercourse with the nuns, then when the nuns were pregnant, they would physically take the baby out of the womb and burry them into the walls. If you go there at night, you can here the aborted babies knocking on the walls, trying to get out. Toilets flushing for no apparent reason, footsteps, and women screaming. There have also been many suicides that have occurred at The Villa on the 4th floor.Rock Island - The Villa - The Villa, back in the early 1900's The Villa was a school for girls, like dormitories. | Men In Black? I used to tour with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. We once stayed at Rock Island High School in Illinois for a few days. The first night there, a few friends of mine had add dreams about walking through the halls of the school. Later, one of the guys from a nearby town told us that the school was supposed to be haunted. There was a small group of us that had been drawn together by our experiences with the paranormal. One of these was haveing weird dreams each night we slept there. A few of the corps members, not of our group, decided they wanted to go on a ghost hunt. My closest friend and I decided to go along for the amusement. We followed them around a bit and then found ourselves in the school's basement and boiler room. Suddenly, I felt a strong presence right in front of us. It amused me and my friend that the group walked right through it and never even noticed. We shared the joke with a look at each other and in the direction the spirit moved away. When the group moved on down the hall she and I decided to stay behind and find out what was going on. I noticed a laundry cart in the corner by a steel grate. I pulled it out into the light (for some reason) and there was the face of a girl burned into the cloth! Just then, Jan (I'll call her) went kind of glassy eyed! I asked her what was up and she said, "Shhh...she's talking to me!" I got chills...again. She told me the little girl was afraid of men and was drawn to her because she was female and could hear. Just then I felt the two spirits separate and the evil one moved near to me. Jan the said "She is being held here by a man. I think the man killed her." The dark one grew think and menacing. I moved toward it to quiet it down. Child killers are the worst, in my oppinion, and I despise spirits who trap others. Especially ones who trap innocent little children. It backed behind the grating and stood in the darkness. I knelt before the gate and challenged the spirit to not be such a chicken! I pushed at him and he moved toward me, then ran back around the corner into the shadows behind the power breakers. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. It wasn't Jan. I grew very angry and exploded my moved it off of me. My shoulder felt cold and icy, though, still. I got the feeling it wasn't the same spirit. I stood up and put my hand on the gate. Jan asked me if I was sure I wanted to do that. I said I had to. I started to open the gate and the spirit flew at me like a big black curtain...and went through me! I felt a chill wind pass through me. Then it came back through from behind and stopped in front of me. I opened the gat e and walked inside. I challenged it and it backed away. I walked to where it stood and knelt again. It fled off into the deep shadows again and beconed me. I told it, out loud, that if it thought I was coming in there it was out of it's mind! Then I turned and walked back out to where Jan was standing. We decided it was time to go and started off to get ready for evening rehearsal. The next day, as we were packing up to leave, I noticed a black man, in a black suit, with black sunglasses on watching us haul our stuff out to the busses. Every time I walked by him I could feel his eyes follow me. Later, after I ate, I saw him sitting in the grass watching the football team practice. I walked up to him and said "hi." He turned his head and said "HI! It's good to see you again!" I let it go. I asked him what he was doing sitting out here? He told me that his son was playing football. He asked me about the corps and stuff like that. There was a bible sitting about 3 feet away in front of him. He told me he had been to his church up the road this morning. That somehow had an od ring to it to me, but I don't know why. He asked me where I was from. I said Louisiana. He said "Oh yes? There is much work down there." I told him that, actually, it was hard to find a job...then I realized he wasn't talking about jobs. He turned and looked at me, still with his shades on, and smiled. I got a serious chill. The truck's horn blew and I told him I had to go. I stood up and he offered his hand. I took it and said it was nice to meet him. He said, "Yes, it's nice to see you again, Chad." I was on the bus before I realized I had never told him my name! I jumped out and looked to the field, but he was gone. I got another serious chill. (getting one now!) Okay, this next part really did happen, but it sounds like a lie. After I got home from tour, I was driving around with my best friend in her new car. She was very happy about it. Suddenly, I was overcome with chills and spirits sense and I started to tell her to turn here, here, etc.... Then I started to tell her about the story I just wrote down. Suddenly, we were at a stop sign and staring at a burned out building. I could feel the spirits and energy flowing from the place and it was overwhelming me! She turned left and I watched the place go by. When I looked back to the front, there was a black van in front of us. I asked her where that had come from and she said she didn't know! Then the van slowed and stopped. We sat behind it for a minute. Then my friend told me that she was getting really scared. I told her to just drive around. She did, and I looked up at the driver's window. There, smiling back at me, was a black man, in a black coat, with black sunglasses on..at just after midnight! I told her to step on it and didn't tell her what I had seen until we were almost home. She freaked out and told me she had been terrified by that van and could hardly drive. I can see why! |
| Quincy - Greenwood cemetery - There are lights in the back corner of the cemetery at nighttime. When you walk forwards you can see something hanging in a tree and if you blink it will disappear. Up in frobt of the mausoleum you can see and hear little children playing, and when you walk towards them and smile they will smile back at you, and wave and disappear. Quincy - Madison School - In the early 1900's, a house stood in the place where the school is today. A woman, living alone was murdered, and the killers were never found. It is told that she was dragged down the large staircase, then stabbed until her screams stopped. They then hid her body in the closet at the base of the stairs. The bloodstains were never able to be removed completely. Quincy - Quincy Junior High- The School was built over fourty years ago. A student had lost their girlfriend and hung themself in the bathroom over the loss. Most students now were never told about this incident, so they wouldnt get any ideas. The boy is heard by teachers and staff after school crying faintly and they hear footsteps to the bathroom, mumbling and then it all stops. It replays on the day the kid died. Teachers had tried to figure out natural causes but when ever they went to check for something that was within a short distance from the haunting, it would stop. Quincy - Quincy University - Padua Hall - The fourth floor of Padua Hall is haunted by a former student that committed suicide by jumping out of the window. The floor was eventually closed down, but reopened earlier this year. People have reported hearing the boy screaming. Reynolds Township - Reynolds Cemetery - In the rear of the cemetery there is the small grave of a baby boy. The baby was abandoned and found weeks later and the mother was never caught. On a full moon at exactly midnight you can feel his heartbeat if you lay your hand on his stone. |
| Milan - Milan Manor Apartment Woods - In 1986 a young boy was ran over and killed by a tractor plow. The farmer who was driving the plow reported seeing another boy. The farmer stated the only description he could give of the second boy was, he was wearing a red t-shirt, blue jeans, and had dark brown hair and was around the age of eight. When the neighbors of the deceased boy who resided at Milan Manor Apartments were questioned they reported seeing him last with a young unknown boy fitting the farmers description. There were no reports of the boy in the red t-shirt being seen until 1989. There have been numerous reports of two boys playing in the woods together around dusk. Upon hearing this story a couple of explorers decided to check it out. They took a trip to Milan Manor Apartments parked in the parking lot found a trail that lead into the woods located past the cul-de-sac (circle). They followed the winding trail to a little stream, crossed the stream walking over a piece of lumber, took the path leading to the right, then they came to a fork in the path & decided to take the left path up a hill after we reached the top of the hill we stopped to catch their breath before continuing. As they caught their breath they saw two little boys, one of which was wearing a red t-shirt running into the cornfield as they entered the corn field they vanished. Unable to believe what they had just seen they walked toward the cornfield and was unable to find even a footprint but could still hear the laughter of the boys. |
Port Byron - Cherry Street - A home that is now torn down, used to be a hospital back in a war. And then later was a nursing home. There has been a man in a hat called "the man in the hat" that has been seen roaming around in the home. Seen by residence and visitors. Smoke in the dining room when no one was smoking. Very strong presence , eerie feelings, once someone heard there name called and no one else was in the home. Very strong eerie feelings even from the street. |

| The Ghosts At The Foot Of Our Beds One would imagine that living next door to a cemetery could be, to say the least, a bit scary. But we don't feel that way about our cemetery, or perhaps I should say, THE CEMETERY. Because there is no other cemetery quite like Chippiannock, unless you're familiar with the Quad-Cities, you may never have heard of Chippiannock Cemetery. Located on a rolling hillside on Rock Island, its name honors the local Indian culture of several hundred years ago. Describing Chippiannock has always been a challenge for writers because it is far removed from a traditional cemetery. Not a subdivision-like layout here, with clone-like headstones or rows of perfectly spaced plots. Chippiannock is ...well... different. For instance, there is the full-size anchor, which adorns the grave of a ship's captain. Then there are the huge metallic balls that appear at several gravesides, seeming like the discarded marbles of an ancient giant's child, rather than memorials whose significance I can't even begin to imagine. Stone trees, an eternal baby's casket and more grace the thousands of graves on that rolling Illinois hillside. Has Chippiannock ever frightened me? Truthfully no, because it always seemed so unique, almost a living tribute to the souls of the departed men, women, and children in the merciful Hand of God. Chippiannock does not make me think of the deaths of those buried there but rather of their lives. That's why for years I have loved walking its grounds with Sam, our four-year old Jack Russell Terrier, and have done so for many years. Finally a few months ago, Ruthie, my two-year-old daughter was old enough to join us on our excursions. Of course, Ruthie isn't much of a walker yet, which makes it interesting for me, coaxing Ruthie while trying to stop Sam from running after every squirrel in sight. We certainly have our fun, and I know Ruthie and Sam enjoy Chippiannock as much as I do. After several visits, Ruthie had developed a favorite stop, where we just HAD TO GO each time. This was the grave of the Dimick children, Eddie and Josie, who were taken by illness from their families well over a hundred years ago. But after this tragic loss, Eddie and Josie's pet dog would go day after day to their gravesite, and just wait attentively for the children he loved so much to return. The Dimicks were so moved by the dog's devotion, that a full-size statue of the dog rests alongside Eddie's and Josie's grave...their eternal friend. There was something about that dog, (he appears to have been a collie) that just moves my little Ruthie. Every time we visit Chippiannock she gives the statue of the dog a hug. Frankly I didn't think there could be much harm in it, until the day when Ruthie told me about "the doggies that sleep by her bed." "You mean doggie, don't you Ruthie?" I asked her, knowing Sam often slept by the foot of her bed. He was very protective of Ruthie. "No," she said, "there's Sammy, and the other doggie. My newest friend I always hug." Well, besides Sammy, there could only be one other dog she "always hugs", but I decided not to say anything more about it. My wife Becky and I could have a talk about this imaginary friend later. I debated whether or not to stop our Chippiannock visits for awhile, but frankly Becky and I felt there were far worse imaginary friends a child could have! So our walks and Ruthie's hugs, continued. I didn't think much about it for several weeks, UNTIL last night. I often peek into Ruthie's room late each night, for I am one of those fathers who worry about the slightest thing. Is Ruthie all right? Is she breathing ok? So I turned the doorknob quietly and peeked into her room. Because of what I saw that night, I don't feel I have to worry as much anymore. Ruthie looked fine, sleeping calmly, peaceful, and content. At the foot of her bed, Sam was also sleeping soundly. At first I didn't see just beyond Sam, but as my eyes adjusted to the darkened room, I did. Opaque like a mist, with a gentle glow, lay the collie, quietly, vigilantly, sleeping. I must have let out a slight gasp at the sight, for he lifted his head and turned his face to me. As he looked into my eyes, I felt the devotion in his heart as his eyes told me "Thank you for letting me love your child too." With that, his gaze returned to Ruthie...ever faithful, obedient, and eternal in his devotion, My child's newest eternal friend...For God created unto mortals a devoted heart, a faithful protector, if only we allow them into our hearts.. |
