This simple web research lesson is an authentic assessment for several technology and social studies core curriculum goals. 

 

STANDARD 8.1 (COMPUTER AND INFORMATION LITERACY) ALL STUDENTS WILL USE COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TO GATHER AND ORGANIZE INFORMATION AND TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.

A. Basic Computer Skills and Tools

1. Use basic technology vocabulary.

2. Use basic features of an operating system (e.g., accessing programs, identifying and selecting a printer, finding help).

3. Input and access text and data, using appropriate keyboarding techniques or other input devices.

9. Use basic computer icons.

B. Application of Productivity Tools

3. Practice appropriate Internet etiquette.

Information Access and Research

5. Recognize the need for accessing and using information.

7. Locate specific information.

STANDARD 6.6 (GEOGRAPHY) ALL STUDENTS WILL APPLY KNOWLEDGE OF SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND OTHER GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN RELATION TO THE PHYSICAL AND CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT.

A. The World in Spatial Terms

2. Explain that the globe is a model of the earth and maps are representations of local and distant places.

B. Places and Regions

1. Identify the physical and human characteristics of places and regions in New Jersey and the United States (e.g., landforms, climate, vegetation, housing, parks).

 

 

Students would have the following worksheet and a large map of the United Stated to use when the laptop cart came into the classroom.  Students would have had previous training on the laptops and on map skills.  This project would be done independently to assess each student’s ability with the computer and the map.

 

 

    

National Park Web Research

1.     Go to http://www.nps.gov/parks.html

2.     Click on  - VIEW ALL PARKS

3.     Click on the letter of the alphabet that matches the first letter in the name of the park.

4.     Scroll down the page to find the place.

5.     Read the name of the city and the abbreviation for the state.

6.     Draw a line from the National Park to the state that it is in.

7.     When you have finished all the parks, go to your United States Map.

          Find the states that each park is in and write the name of the park in that state.  Happy Mapping!
