CARYL STEPHANSON                   K92

2001 was Caryl's third year as an oval track racer. She was one of only three women competing as a main driver in Saskatchewan and the only one, as well as the first one, competing at the Street Stock level on dirt in 2001. She is the first female main driver in the following clubs: Preeceville, Sk; Tisdale, Sk; Swan River, Mb. In 1999 and 2000 she raced in the Hobby/Thunder Stock Class in
#14, a 1971 Cutlass with a 350 cubic inch Oldsmobile motor. In 1999 she was Rookie of the Year at her home club in Preeceville and came in second in her class in points.  She was also presented the People's Choice Award in 1999. In 2000 she won the Championship in her class. In 2001 she came in third in Preeceville, 7th in Swan River and 10th in Tisdale. She was unable to attend all scheduled races in either Swan River or Tisdale and ran all but one of the races at her home track with her Hobby car; for this she received the Ghost Car Award in Preeceville.

Caryl qualified for the Provincial Championships in all years she raced; her best showing was in 2000 when she was seventh overall. One of her favourite races in 2000 was a 100 lapper in Swan River, Mb where she was the only Hobby driver competing against Street Stock cars; she was very happy to finish the race and to place fourth. She lost count of the feature and heat wins she made in the two years she was in the Hobby class. In 2001 she finished 15th overall in the Provincial standings. She had a lot of trouble with her car this year, but the first race day she completed she placed top in points at the Invitational in Swan River on August 5th out of a field of twenty. She was also awarded the Best Dressed Car Trophy. She came in 6th at the Boas Street Stock Invitational in October in Rosetown.

The first time Caryl drove a stock car, it was a spur of the moment decision. She was told to get in the car as the Powder Puff was starting. Even though she didn't do very well--she could barely reach the pedals and couldn't go any faster than about 30 mph--she was hooked. She won top points in the Powder Puff class at her home track in 1997 and just missed in 1998. 1998 was also the year she won every race that she entered. Her husband Scott--a racer and a champion in his own right-- offered to build her a Hobby Stock car for the following year and she jumped at the chance. The resulting car, #14, proved to be both a winning vehicle for Caryl and a winning example of Scott's expertise as a chassis builder.

Caryl is now partnered with  a 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 355 cubic inch Chevrolet motor and a Powerglide transmission. The car's number is K92. Caryl is an avid racer and in 2001 attended different tracks each weekend, sometimes two per weekend, in order to take full advantage of the short racing season in Saskatchewan. She raced a total of 28 days in 2001. Caryl also works full time and, in order to become a better driver, lifts weights, power walks and reads anything she can get her hands on pertaining to short track driving techniques and tech tips. In the winter she plays computer and video games (racing ones of course!) so she doesn't go into total withdrawal.

Caryl is very appreciative of the sponsorship she has received from
Acklands-Grainger Inc. of Tisdale and Mr. Transmission of Regina and would like to say, "Thank you, I couldn't have done it without you!"
