| An Article From The Scott City Sun's Dicke Dunn ALEXANDER BAY, TC -- The SHL Awards Show was held Sunday night at the Alexander Bay Events Centre in Alexander Bay, TC. The annual awards show brings every season to an end, with this year being quite special with the three expansion teams brought into the league. The night kicked off with cocktails; General Managers and players alike were reminiscing on the season that was. Marktown Petes GM Mark Peterson was half cut before he got to the Alexander Bay Events Centre. Supper was held two hours laters, a fine meal was prepared by The Denise Berg Catering Company. Finally an hour later the players and General Managers were shuffled into the auditorium where the TV Crews from across the nation picked up the live feed. The first award of the night presented was the Rooke of the Year, presenting the award was SHL alumni Steve Yzerman. After announcing the nominees the winner of the 2007 Rookie of the Year was Evgeni Malkin of the Gregville Assassines. Malkin had a very strong rookie season. He was a third round draft pick of the Scott City Grrrowl before being traded in week 6 of the season to the Assassine's in a four player swap which included Mikka Kiprusoff getting sent to the Grrrowl. Goaltender of the Year was the next award to be handed out. Jim Carr of 640 The Heat in Dionland, RF was the presenter of the award, after the nominations were announced, Martin Brodeur of the Olchowyville Leafs was named the award recipient. Brodeur led the SHL in wins and in shutouts in the 2006/2007 season, he was able to keep a offensive challenged Leafs squad in the playoff picture to the very last two weeks of the regular season Special guest entertainer Dierks Bentley took to the stage after the nights first two awards and performed three songs for the sold out audience at the Events Centre. The third award presented was Defensemen of the Year, presenting the award was Tony Esposito from 88.7 The Wolf in Marktown, HC. The list of nominees was presented and Sheldon Souray of the Fort Macfie Gangbang won the award. Souray had an exceptional season being the leader of the Gangbang's strong core of blue liners. He beat out teammate and power play defense partner Scott Niedermayer for the award. Souray was traded to the Gangbang in a four player mid-season deal with the Marktown Petes. The newly created Managerial Staff of the Year was the fourth award of the evening to be handed out. The presenter of the award was former SHL General Manager of the Kyle County Ice, Kyle Gordon. After the five organizations that were competing for the award were announced, Kyle presented the award to the Copenhagen Cup Championship winning team the Gilmore Gold Jackets. The final award of the evening to be handed out was the illustrious Most Valuable Player of the league. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening Ron MacLean was the presenter. The nominations for the award were announced and the SHL's leading scorer from the 2006/2007 season Sidney Crosby of the Dionland Twisers won the award. Crosby was the second Twister to win the MVP award in SHL history, the last was Martin St. Louis who was nominated for the award this year as a member of the Adamville Falcons. Crosby was the sixth overall draft pick in the first round of the draft and was a big time impact player on the Twisters scoring line. Dierks Bentley took to the stage after the awards were concluded with and performed three more songs ending the show and officially bringing a conclusion to the 2006-2007 SHL season. |
