Interface and startup tips

Start Unreal and goto Unreal's Options/Advanced Options/Advanced/Game Engine Setting/CacheSizeMegs It will probably be set to '2'. Change it to a number about 5 to 10 less than your computers memory (gotta leave some for win95??). Example: I have 48mb of ram and I set mine to 40. (Play with your setting but use as large a number as possible) Close the window and exit Unreal properly. Restart Unreal and enjoy much less stuttering. :) As far as I can tell it seems to be a similar setting to Quake1's -winmem switch but it seems to make a much bigger difference in smooth gameplay when playing Unreal.

If you have multiple fast hard drives, you could set your cache directory to another drive than where unreal is located, so that one hard drive is caching data while the other is used for loading new data. Should increase performance especially on low memory systems.

Lower graphics details. Find screen resolution which suits your system. I play on PII 400MHz, 192MB RAM, Matrox Millenium G400MAX and my settings are 800x600 32bit colour. Framerates are good and there are no hickups.

Optimize windows. Defragment your hard drive after installation. Don't trust benchmarks you see on internet. Those benchmarks are done on freshly installed windows and without any other software running.

You can disable the flyby sequence (movie) by making one small edit to your /unrealtournament/system/unrealtournament.ini file. In the first section of the file, replace LocalMap=CityIntro.unr with LocalMap=UT-Logo-Map.unr.

Of course, the right way to do this is to beat the single player ladder and earn the Xan mesh, but if you've reached the end of your rope trying, it's easy to do. Just add the following section to your /unrealtournament/system/user.ini file:

[Botpack.Ladder]
HasBeatenGame=True

If you are experiencing CD authentication errors (or just want a faster load time), use the following process.
1. Backup your UnrealTournament.exe to another folder/diskette.
2. Download this no-cd patch & extract it into the UnrealTournament\System directory, over-writing the older version.
3. You will need to replace the backup UnrealTournament.exe in order to install newer patches that become available (if any).
Download the patch HERE.
