Cameron
Welsh: Mitch McColl
Cameron was born on March 9th, 1977. And
at 22 years of age, Cameron Welsh joined Home and Away as Mitch McColl,
a 16-year-old kid who has been kicked out onto the street by his stepfather
and comes to Summer Bay.
His motivation to make the move was to
become an actor, but he actually did an apprenticeship as a chef!
'It was a means to an end doing the apprenticeship,
I knew I wanted to do some acting work, but knew it wouldn't happen overnight,'
he says. 'It was a way to get Sydney and it gave me the flexibility to
look around the city and to eventually find an agent.'
Cameron worked in various restaurants
and enjoyed the experience, and it also gave him the chance to check out
the city of Sydney and decide where he was heading in life.
After two years living in Sydney he found
an agent and then the time came to finish up his apprenticeship, as acting
roles started to come his way and it became a full-time job.
Cameron has always had a passion for acting:
he often wrote his school plays and was heavily involved with drama and
music at school.
Cameron also had his own band at school
and they would often play gigs for his school and did some local gigs too.
However, Cameron is no stranger to acting,
having relatives in the industry and taking up private acting tuition with
David Field in 1994 and a private acting workshop with Actors Centre in
1997. He also had lessons at 'On Camera Connection'.
Cameron does have other television and
film credits up his sleeve, including Wildside on the ABC; Talking, a film
produced in 1998 by the University of NSW, and Sadness, a film produced
by Film Australia.
1998 was a big year for Cameron – he appeared
in a Toyota ad, produced a theatre play called Bellydancing and organised
the Kings Cross Theatre Festivale.
But it is 1999 that has been the biggest
year for Cameron, going for the role of Mitch McColl. After the initial
audition he got a callback and screen-tested with Kate Ritchie, and then
found out a couple of weeks later that he got the part.
'I was very pleased about getting the
role. It is such a great opportunity for furthering my craft and the fact
that it is steady work for three years. That seemed appealing to me after
having bit pieces here and there, and of course the idea of going to the
beach to film with gorgeous women was also very appealing.'
Cameron's character Mitch has had some
bad luck in his life. Mitch's parents divorced when he was six and then
his father disappeared shortly after being served with his child support
requirements. Mitch's mother remarried, but the man in question resented
supporting someone else's child when they were already doing it so tough.
Stepfather and son endured each other for a number of years, but as Mitch
grew older and began to assert himself a full-scale war broke out between
the two.
Mitch's mother was the only thing keeping
Mitch on track and at home. But his mother was diagnosed with cancer when
he was 12 and then passed away. He knew the only thing to do was to start
a new life.
Mitch finds his way to Summer Bay
and runs into some of the residents, but it is Hayley (Rebecca Cartwright)
who has caught his eye, and he is not in a hurry to move on as yet.
'Mitch is a bit of bad boy with a heart
of gold. He is troubled by the events in his past, that seem to weigh him
down, but he strives to go forward and hopefully people will see that and
the fact that he is trying to get on with his life,' Cameron says about
his character.
Cameron first appeared as Mitch McColl
in Home and Away on the 15th of July 1999.
