The Society was formed in 1984. Soon the plans of the committee were put into action and the practice of the meeting once a month was started. There were two choices to the locations of monthly prayer meetings. One was to rent a public place from the city and the other one was to rotate from one house to another. The latter was decided thanks to the owners of bigger homes who happily offered their place for the monthly gatherings. This enabled us to accommodate 30 40 families with children. A set format was developed to meet at 10:30 a.m to conduct Sandhya / Havan and Puja of the month, followed by Bhajans, Aarti, some religious talks, prasad and a pot luck lunch. All families of East Indian background were invited to attend and enjoy the cohesiveness of the great Hindu Heritage. The attendance at each meeting was very good and growing.
Some white sheets and light carpets were donated by attending members for our use during monthly gatherings. All sheets and other essentials were stored by Ravi Chandok and Bhagavan Singh and were brought to the next monthly meeting location regularly until we acquired a permanent building of our own.
The offer of the following families to accommodate such a large number is fully recognized.
1. Ravi Chandok
2. Basant Chopra
3. Kunwar Singh
4. Pran Mehta
5. Louis Wanner
6. Avanish Shukla
7. Ravi Badhwar
After a few years the attendance of the congregation grew to the point that the space available was not enough. So we started to look for a separate place of our own where we could celebrate religious festivals and perform other cultural activities e.g. dance, music, and drama. For this purpose a stage and an auditorium was essential. It was also felt that we needed a place where our members could have private ceremonial functions e.g. wedding sangeet nights, birthdays, garba dances and have time flexibility etc. For these one needs a place to sit and a kitchen to cook or heat food. The place would also meet the needs of general public in Sarnia wanting to use it for similar purpose.
Later a special meeting was called at Bhagavan Singhs house to form a Hindu Society and elect new office bearers and collect money to acquire a suitable building. It was decided to name the Society Sarnia Hindu Cultural Society (SHCS). The first President of Sarnia Hindu Cultural Society was Dr. Ravi Badhwar and the other members of the 1st. Executive Committee Board Members in 1984 were:
