| Sarnia Hindu Society Constitution | |||||||||||
| The initial inquiry in this area was made by Ravi Chandok taking his cue from The Charter of Halifax Temple, which provided us with good guidelines in areas like the methods of raising funds, the procedure of registering as a charitable organization, and writing the constitution.
It was decided by the first Executive committee that we would call this Society as Sarnia Hindu Cultural Society and a formal working constitution was developed. Ravi Chandok, Ashvin Thakkar, Basant Chopra and Ravi Badhwar were instrumental in drafting the 1st. constitution of the Society and which the 1st. Executive committee adopted on October 17, 1984. In late 1984, application was made to Revenue Canada for registration of the Society as a charity under the Income Tax Act. The application included a copy of the Memorandum of Association and By-Law No.1 in order to confirm that the Society was constituted as a non-profit organization and that it devoted all of its resources exclusively for the charitable purpose of the advancement of the Hindu religion, a list of proposed activities to be undertaken to achieve the Societys stated objectives. After a lengthy process of review, consultation and submission of requested revisions to the governing documents, Revenue Canada confirmed that effective April 30, 1985 the Society had qualified for tax-exempt status as a registered charitable organization. Revenue Canada assigned 0707240-39-17 as the official registration number. With the introduction of GST on January 1, 1991 the Society was assigned 89237 3044 RR001 as its new registration number. The initial constitution (Memorandum of Association) was drafted using the governing documents of Windsor, London and Halifax Hindu organizations as a guide. |
