Two ladies pass by, complaining:
- When I saw it was all cut I was so mad!
- What a shame!
Mafalda reflects:
- God, these are sad times! You can no longer tell if people are talking about movies or milk gone sour!
(Quino. Mafalda. The funny thing is, in Chile this is not a joke.)
I go to the movies to have fun: drama, thrillers, horror, f&sf, romance... it's all the same to me. It might not be art in the long run, but I have this mania of enjoying what spare time I have (and if I'm paying money for it, specially so...)
It doesn't have to be a Master Piece, with a plot as thick as a brick, with heroes or pathethic victims...Nope. If I end up having fun, it's OK.
...and if the movie is really good, then better so.
I do know there are 'art movies', like, say, sweden movies with captions in french (very interesting) and guys with deep frowns watching it as they would a world class chess game, and then making pseudointellectual comments at the end of the movie, pondering why the chicken decided to actually cross the road...
...and thankyou, but I'll pass. The only time I've seen that kind of movies was because, when they were first commercially shown I happened to like it, and then they decided later that it was an art movie.
So it was with Blade Runner. I saw it and loved it... and nobody gave a damn about the movie (or my interest in it). Later, it became an art movie, so the cinemas were choke filled with guys with deep frowns watching it as they would a world class chess game, etc. etc..
And what about censorship? In Chile?!? I've heard so many pathetic and inane reasons to deny an adult's right to watch whatever he wants to (and in its full version) to keep arguing about it. If you want something more on that issue, go read chile.soc.censura: there you'll find some food for thought...
