Achatina panthera

This snail has a distinctive shell which is almost blue in colour and is thicker and therefore tougher than the shells of most landsnails. It looks more like the shell of a seasnail and has a very thick rim. This is very unusual among the Achatinadae species. The snails tend to retract beyond this rim when asleep, meaning that their appearance is different from that of other African snails while asleep. Other snails retract to the edge of the shell, while panthera retract further into the shell. It is very difficult to see the breathing/ventilation hole in the panthera's body, again because it is hidden and protected by this extra thick rim to the shell.

Achatina panthera grow to a similar size as fulica, sometimes a little larger, and are similar to look after. They require a tank at room temperature or slightly warmer, and, as with all landsnails are fed primarily on fresh vegetables and fruits. I have noticed that they seem to be a little more fussy than some species and so it may be necesary to try out several different types of vegetable and fruit until you find some that the snails are willing to eat. They are considered fairly easy to breed, laying lots of eggs which require little attention to hatch.
From time to time I may have some Achatina panthera available to buy. Geocities prevents me from setting up an online sales centre, so to ask about the availability of Achatina panthera please contact me.
