| They hadn't been asleep for more than a couple of hours when the phone rang. since they were in such a deep sleep, neither heard the ringing right away. it wasn't until michaela rolled over on her side, waking up slightly that she heard it.
"Hello" Her voice was still groggy because she wasn't fully awake. "Dr. Mike?" The voice on the other end was that of a crying girl. Michaela was fully awake now, and she recognized the voice on the other end. "Colleen? Is that you?" "Dr. Mike...it's ma...." "What?!" Michaela shot up and woke Sully in the process. "What happened Colleen?" "Well...she was called into work to cover for someone....well, the hospital called just a while ago and said she had never made it in." Colleen was sobbing so hard that it became near impossible for Michaela to understand waht she was saying. "Colleen you have to calm down and tell me what's wrong." She heard Colleen take a couple of deep breaths and calm down a bit. "Ma...she's.....she's been...." "What...? Colleen tell me." The suspense was almost too much for her to bare. Finally she heard the phone being yanked out of Colleen's hands and Matthew was now on the phone. "Hello? Dr. Mike?" "Oh Matthew, please tell me what's going on." "Well as Colleen said, ma was supposed to be going to work, but she never arrived at the hospital. We told them not to worry that maybe she was just running late. Then a couple of minutes ago the police came to the hose. They asked to speak to the babysitter and she sent us up to our rooms. We knew it was something bad, so we sat down on the top step and listened. All we could hear was the police officer say there had been a bad wreck, and ma's name and not doing good. Then he said she was at the hospital." "Oh my God!!!" Sully heard the change in Michaela's tone and sat up putting an arm around her to let her know he was there. Michaela told Matthew not to worry that she and Sully would go down to the hospital and see what they could do. Chapter 10 Michaela hung up, and jumped out of bed. �Sully we have to get the hospital.� �What�s wrong Michaela what happened?� �It�s Charlotte, she�s been in a terrible accident. The children are worried they don�t know how she is, and I told them we�d get down there and check it out.� Sully was dressing as fast as he could. He pulled on an old t-shirt, jeans and slipped into his shoes. Michaela was already dressed and was heading downstairs. When he reached the doorway he saw Michaela grabbing her keys and her hand was trembling. He knew she was in no condition to drive so he reached for her hand and gave it a slight squeeze as he took the keys from her. Sully drove as fast as he could. When they reached the hospital Michaela ran out of the car. Josef was on call that night and he was the one that was treating Charlotte. He couldn�t believe that his dear friend was laying there fighting for her life. He was doing everything he could to save her, and to help matters the terrible foursome were his assistants. Charlotte was lucky to have people that cared for her fighting to keep her alive. Dawn had just walked out of the room when she ran into Michaela. �Dawn, do you know where Charlotte is?� Dawn had tears in her eyes and pointed to one of the rooms. Michaela didn�t waste any time and headed in the direction Dawn had pointed. As soon as she reached the door her father came out followed closely behind by the other nurses. Michaela saw there were tears in their eyes, but she didn�t know if they were happy tears or sad tears. �Father how is she? Is she going to be alright?� Josef looked at his daughter and saw the worry in her eyes. �Michaela, I did everything I could but it was just too late.� |
