Lesson 4: That's some catch, that catch-22.
What’s on for today and why?
In this lesson students will begin to see how outside forms of media can be brought in to accompany the given text. This lesson will also show students how to find answers to the text using the internet.
The lesson is designed to get the students to prove to the teacher that they do not need the teacher to answer questions for them. This will give the teacher more liberty to do critical analysis in the classroom rather than answer simple questions. Using a movie to make connections with Graceland gets the students to do comparisons of two different forms of media. This is a stepping stone for their presentations.
What to do?
1.
Journal:
Unconditional love and acceptance, that is the way to peace. But what if you accept everything that happens? What happens to society? Is unconditional acceptance about everything acceptable? Why or why not? – Discuss
2.
Relating the Journal:
Relate journal back to page 56-57. Discuss with the class Nigeria and the expectations of its citizens. When students ask questions about Nigeria, be prepared to use the Internet and a projector or TV monitor to model how to find answers to their questions on the Internet. Tell the students that when they have questions, find the answers and then blog about it. If they cannot find the answers, blog about that and bring the questions to class.
3.
The Catch–22 Connection:
Read from page 67 starting “Jonah had been rich…” then show the clip of Catch –22 with the pilot’s suicide and how Doc Daneeka vanishes because people only believe the roster of the plane, believing the Doc was onboard, even though the Doc is standing in front of them. Ask the class how these scenes are similar. The town’s people went according to superstition and the soldiers when according to the roster. What is being valued? What should be valued?
4.
Homework:
Read Chapters 7&8
How’d it go?
If students guided the teacher through the Internet search for information they are more than ready to be given this task. If the students got excited about the connections between a movie and the novel they might start to look for connects in different forms of media in their own lives regarding Graceland.
The students will gain class participation for involving themselves in the Internet search and movie/novel analysis.
