Lesson 15: The Price
is Right, the Price of Life
What’s on for today and why?
In this lesson the students will be given full rein in what they chose to do with the chapter. They have a couple choices to analyze a particular character and his meaning, which they will be doing through group work.
Since the students are getting to the end of the book they should be able to do a lot of the interpretation on their own. They will be given liberty, giving them a chance to explore the character in their own ways. The students can depend on their strengths or try something new. This also will be important since they are really learning who Redemption is right now and they can use this to look back on when they get to the end and evaluate Redemption again.
1.
Journal:
What is Elvis doing at the start of Chapter 23? What is he looking for? What does he want to hear? Is he looking for comfort? Looking for a sign? In what form? – Discuss.
2.
Who is Redemption?
What is Redemption’s role in chapters 22 and 23? In small groups, pick a scene that you believe is indicative of who Redemption is, either for the story or for Elvis and dramatize it in some way. Turn it into a poem, write a film treatment, or do a reinterpretation of the scene through sketching. (If an explanation needs to accompany the project to convey meaning, make sure it is included)
3.
Sharing:
Students will share what they came
up with at the end of class, giving each group about 2-3 minutes a piece. (This
will go in their portfolios)
4.
Homework:
Work on packets.
How’d it go?
If students got creative and not only picked integral scenes, but interpreted them through creative mediums that really showed who Redemption is in some way, students capably accomplished the task. Most of these activities were all done during the unit or at least in a previous unit so the students do not need extra explanation. The students will be assessed according to the critical thinking that is evident through the piece. These pieces will be collected, marked, and returned to the group. The group must figure out how to copy the project so each member has it in his or her portfolio. It will be graded according to the checklist.
