Group Presentation Assignment

Students are to form groups of four and will collectively select a topic to closely look at and analyze in the text.  This topics can be any lens, the exploration of a specific name/character in the text, a specific theme, or any other idea that the students come up with and can prove to the teacher that it I a worth-while and literature-based topic.  Once the topic is chosen, the group must present a proposal (a paragraph briefly discussing what the group has chosen) five days after this sheet is distributed.  The proposal can be handed in early, thus will be reviewed early, giving the group extra time to work.  The teacher will review these proposals and approve of them.  If the group’s proposal is turned down the group has two days to resubmit their proposal.  Time is essential and must be taken into consideration.  The later the group gets approved, the less time the group has to work.

Once the topic is chosen the students must complete four components from a list of five.  These components can be divided to the group’s liking.  When the presentation is given, keep in mind that the time must be divided up equally among the group-mates, everyone must present and explain part of the project.  These components are:

1.      Close reading of a specific passage. The passage will be read to the class and the student will go into deep analysis applying lenses, looking at key words, etc.

2.      Poster with a sketch, collage, etc., with significance to this form of analysis and explanation of it.

3.      Brief dramatization of a piece of Graceland to emphasize significance.

The student will either dramatically read from the book or can write their own monologue from a character’s perspective.  After the student must explain the choices of he or she made and where those choices came from in the text.

4.      Brief research presentation on information that can bring about a

higher understanding of topic.  This can be about the author, the

setting of the novel, information on something specific in the novel,

etc.

5.      Find a song that is significant to Graceland.  Play it for the class and

explain why it is significant.

Keep in mind all components must relate to the topic chosen!!!

The presentations will be 10-15 minutes per group, giving enough time for songs to play, etc.

This project will not be worked on in class so the group must stay diligent and must meet outside of class time.  If the students have any questions, be sure to Email or ask the teacher in person.
