If you don't happen to be from IIT M but have heard a bunch if IIT M
blokes speak, you may often wonder what strange language they talk in. It
sounds like English, yet is quite different.
Well, here's a rough guide to the slang used at IIT M. Different hostels
have their own dialects, but this should serve as a fairly generic
guide, which should help pave your way to strike a conversation with a
group of IITians next time you run into them. Yensoy !!

Arbit - Something which is not understandable, comes from Arbitrary.
E.g. What an arbit joke.
Argee(R.G.) - To get one up over someone else by unfair means.
Comes from Relative Grading (R.G.). E.g. X argeed Y by running to Z's room
and finishing the last sweet in Z's room before Y could get there!
Ax - A common suffix, can be used on words such as cup, thulp, ditch, cash..
Bogs - Toilets (usually are very dirty).
Cash - To do well. e.g. I cashed in exams (which hardly ever happens at IIT).
Cat - Someone who's a star (a very smart chap). Everyone claims to be one.
Chumma - Something said or done not seriously. E.g. Chumma he kicked the
football.
Cogging - To copy (tutorial sheets, copying in exams).
Crack - To solve (a problem, puzzle), or to do well. E.g I cracked the course.
Crash - To go to sleep (which all IITians love to do after lunch).
Cup - To fail. Comes from the "U" grade which is the fail grade at IIT M.
The "U" probably looks like a cup, hence the derivation! This is a true IIT
M classic. e.g. I cupped in today's midsem exam (which you'll hear
everyone say).
Deesh - Get lost. E.g. Lets deesh from here, why dont you deesh from my room.
Ditch could also be used.
Despo - Noun: Someone who studies very hard, Verb: To study very hard.
Everyone claims all the others in their branch/hostel to be one!
Enthu - Having lots of enthusiasm. He is a very hi enthu guy. Low enthu is
the opposite.
Fart - To talk nonsense.
Freak Out - To have a lot of fun, to enjoy a lot. Past tense is Froke Out!
Froot - Someone who is naive, comes from the Tamil word "Payam" which
means fruit.
Funda, Fundas (also spelt as Fundaes) - Comes from "Fundamentals". Hi Funda
means someone who's very smart or something which is very good. Low
funda is exactly the opposite.
Futs (also Puts) Keef, Slysh, Cuf - Used in place of Put, Keep, Slight, Cup.
Generally - One of the most commonly used word at IIT M, is generally used
in every sentence. Signifies something which is trite (can be replaced
by "basically").
Goodals - To cheat, cheating. e.g. Hostel X did goodals and won the match!
Grub - Food.
Hajaar - Many, actually anything more than 2 (synonyms are "n", "infinite").
Some have corrupted this to "kajjar". E.g. There were hajjar people
at the OAT (open air theatre) movie today.
eets - a suffix like "ax", e.g. put-eets, thulp-eets.
Junta - Hajjar people, everyone. e.g. Junta come to the common room, GBM
General Body Meeting) is about to start.
Karra - Extreme (can be used in positively or negatively). e.g. Karra Cash,
Karra Cup.
Kill - To do very well. E.g. Aiswariya Rai killed in this movie.
Kult - To eat ravenously. Can also be used in instances such as "Saras
kulted hajjar runs against Godav hostel in cricket today.
Kutti - Tiny, small (comes from Tamil).
Leprous, Lepper, Lep - Someone or something which is not liked. E.g. I
waited for 40 mins but the leprous bus never came. Derived from Leprousy.
OT - Short for "Own Trip". Someone who's not very serious about acads, life
etc is called an OT fellow. If one wants to while away his time with
friends, he'll tell them "Come, lets put OT".
Pack - To respond negatively, to say "no". E.g. Lets pack going for the
movie as its raining.
Para - Extreme, e.g. Para cash, Paara Cup (comes from Tamil).
Passenger - Someone who's there just for the ride and doesnt contribute.
e.g. X was a total passenger in the hockey team.
Peace - A positive acknowledgement (OK), or something which is very simple
to do ( Guess this comes from Piece of Cake).
Pill - To lie.
Pita - Pain In The A*se.
Poled - Totally screwed ("Rodded" can also be used).
Pondy - Material containing adult content.
Poond - To cut in front of someone illegally in a line (comes from Tamil).
Psyche - To get scared. E.g. I got psyched out by the amount of stuff I had
to study for the exam.
RThere - Corrupted form of "Is There". E.g. Grub RThere in my room.
Shady - Something illegal,dirty (basically signifying a negative connotation).
E.g. What shady food we had today in the mess (which occurs everyday).
Stud - Superstar, applies to girls as well!
Thadaal - Gigantic.
Thulp - Comes from "THUmp into puLP". To beat the shiit out of something.
Tool - To while away time, not doing anything productive, which every IITian
does all through IIT life.
Tooms - Short for "Too Much". A positive exclamation.
Total - Used as an adjective, e.g. Total Cash, Total Cup.
Yengyo - Out of this world (comes from Tamil).
Yensoy - Corrupted form of "Enjoy".
