|
|
Budgies are a small type of parakeet originally from the dry regions of Australia. They are wonderful pets that are often just referred to as "parakeets." I like to call them budgies because it is a shortened form of their Australian name, Buderigar.
My budgie's name is Nicky. He is a sky-blue graywing that has been part of our family for over ten |

years now. Nicky is fully feathered (we don't clip his wing feathers to prevent him from flying). He comes out of his cage about twice a day to be with us and to keep fit by flying around the house. He loves to sit on the ceiling fan blades and sing.
Nicky also eats meals with the family. Besides his millet and oat groat seed diet, he eats lots of different kinds of people food. His favorite fare is grapefruit, lettuce, and pasta. He has also been known to dive into the tub of margarine for a beakful of butter. Silly bird! |

Nicky is an accomplished talker. He began learning to imitate human voices when he was about four months old. Training a parakeet is a process that requres patience and consistency. After Nicky got used to human contact, he was interested in the noises we made in the form of words and we repeated phrases until he could imitate them. Some of his favorite things to say are "Precious baby blue bird," "Bye bye Nickster, be good boy," and "Peek-a-boo, Pipsqueak!"
Budgies become very attatched to their human family 'flock' and love to sing for them and spend time with them.
Nicky is a part of our family and we hope he will be around a long time to come.
