Cottage Pie

Ingredients

750g minced (not ground) beef

25g butter

2 medium onions, finely chopped

375ml gravy

2 tablespoons Worcester sauce

Salt and pepper

Potato topping:

500g potatoes, cooked and mashed

Salt and pepper

Large knob of butter

Optional: +/- 100g grated cheese

Cooking

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Total cooking time: 60 minutes

 

Serves 6 people

 

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 210oC (200oC for fan-assisted oven).
  2. Melt butter in a large frying pan or heavy saucepan. Add the onions and cook until soft.
  3. Add the minced meat and Worcester sauce and brown quickly.
  4. Add the gravy, season to taste and simmer until the meat is cooked through and the gravy is heated through. Add the ingredients to a casserole dish and set aside.
  5. Peel and boil the potatoes until soft. Mash them, adding butter and salt and pepper.
  6. Spread the mashed potato over the meat and gravy mixture in the casserole dish. Make it nice and even, and then use a fork to roughen up the surface.
  7. Bake the pie for 40-45 minutes until the potato top is golden (the peaks made by the fork may be just crispy).
  8. If you wish, add grated cheese 10-15 minutes before the end to make the topping cheesy.
