Sometimes When We Touch
By BeccaBOo
"Those were Russian peacekeepers; you killed three of their senior
officers." The words rang in Buxton's ears as he lay in his bunk. He
jumped out though as attention was called on deck.
"Officers on board."
Buxton jumped out of his bunk and stood at attention, but then every male
memeber of the ship was as the Lt. Col. walked down the hallway. 'Lucky Me'
Buxton thought as she stopped in front of him.
"Lt. Buxton, if you'll come with me."
"I'd go anywhere with you."
"Watch it Commander, you're speaking to a senior officer. And you may want
to bring your lawyer, I'm going to be questioning you."
"Yes ma'am."
**
"Commander Rabb."
"Yeah X-Man?"
"I need your help."
"I thought you might ask that. You want me to be your lawyer?"
"That would be a great help sir."
"Have you seen who the prosecution is?"
Harm's question had nothing to do with the case.
"Oh, man have I seen her. What a looker! I could never have dreamed a
Marine like her up."
"Watch your mouth X-Man, she's an officer."
"How'd you know that?"
Harm was already off and running. "Meet me in the conference room, 30
minutes, that's when you're being questioned.
**
She was looking of into the sea, hugging herself to keep warm, and then, her
arms weren't necessary. There was another pair of arms around her.
"Harm."
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming."
She turned around, still in his arms.
"Because this is not going to be a pleasant trip Harm."
"I know that," he moved so that their foreheads were touching, "but it is
just a case Mac, we've gone against each other before."
"Harm, what are you thinking. This isn't just people we don't have any
attachment to. You are going to be implicated in this case. That is
practically your only chance at getting your client off and I don't want you
to have to do that."
"Then we'll plea bargain. Mac, don't let this hurt you. We haven't seen
each other in months, let's just concentrate on catching up."
"Hurt me? Don't let it hurt me?! What do you think your leaving has been
doing to me in these months. Brumby isn't exactly the ideal partner. And
you won't plea bargain. Two flyboys will never settle for second best. Now
if you'll excuse me, I have a case to prepare for."
She turned away from Harm so he wouldn't see the tears that were starting to
well up in her eyes.
"No, you don't Mac, you have a defendant to question. Look at me, dammit!"
He had to physically turn her around to face him. "I did not mean to hurt
you. You know that, you know what my leaving was about."
"My head knows Harm, my heart is having a little trouble understanding.
Come on, we have a case to fight over." She grabbed his hand briefly before
they walked to talk to Buxton.
**
"No, I will not plea bargain. I thought they were Serbs."
"You were too high up to see any markings, you never should have shot at the
trucks."
"Is that true Rabb? Do I have any chance at defense."
"There is a chance."
"Then I want to take it. Will that be all?"
"You are excused Lt.?"
The door shut and Mac let loose.
"No! Harm, I will not do this!"
"Mac, I had to be honest with my client."
"Then Bud will prosecute, because I will have no part of it."
"Mac, it was partially my fault."
"Harm, you ordered him not to. He knew the rules of engagement. He
shouldn't have shot. Do not take the fall! Do not play the martyr!"
The argument had extended into the hallway and the yelling and drawn a
crowd.
"It is my defense! I will run it the way I wish!"
"You're already thousands of miles away on ship. I don't want you in jail.
Harm, I can't do this."
"You're a marine. Semper fi."
"Dammit, why do I always have to be a marine! Why can't I just be Sarah
sometimes."
"You can, you just built a wall."
"I built a wall? That's a little hypocritical don't you think. I'm sorry
the wall had a name!"
"Don't you pull Jordan into this, it is not about her."
"Then what is it about?!"
"I don't remember!"
"People are looking."
"They have been for a while."
"Let's go somewhere and discuss the case."
**
"So how's the *case* going, Pappy?"
"We really did discuss the case."
"Yeah, sure, that is exactly what you did with the drop dead gorgeous Marine
who practically confessed her love for you in the middle of a carrier in
front of most of your peers."
"Shove it Tuna, I have a closing to give."
**
"And in retrospect, it was a misjudgment, but not a punishable one. He was
merely a young pilot, eager to prove himself and hasn't everyone gone
through that stage in one way or another."
Harm took his seat and leaned back, waiting for Mac to work her magic. This
was one case he was not going to fret over loosing.
"Yes, Lt. Buxton was eager. Yes, Lt. Buxton is young, but Lt. Buxton is a
trained Navy pilot. He know the rules on engagement. He knows that you do
not fire if there is no hostile action. There was no hostile action. These
were peace keepers! Lt Buxton disobeyed an order from his commanding
officer. He was too eager to get the kill, too eager to prove himself and
most of all too arrogant in a pilot's game of tit for tat."
**
The sentence given, it was time for Mac to leave. The helicopter was
touching down and Harm and Mac were saying their goodbyes.
"I miss you already. This is so hard. I've already had to do this once,
and I'm not going to do it again, so I am just going to say goodbye."
"Why goodbye and not goodluck?"
"Because what has love got to do with anything."
"Love has to do with everything."
He put a hand lovingly to her cheek and let his fingers drag slowly down,
tracing her tears.
"It will work out."
"I know, but it has taken so long already."
"Then it can't be much longer can it."
He placed a light kiss on her lips and then she had to leave.
**
There was music playing in the background as Harm typed on his computer.
His mind drifted off long enough to hear one song.
You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
*My leaving hurt her. I never meant to hurt her, but dammit, it hurt me
too!*
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
*All the secrets Mac has shared with me in the past years. The memories are
priceless.
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
*God knows how many times I've had that feeling.*
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
*Flying or Mac?"
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
*That's why I chose flying*
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
*God she irritates me sometimes!*
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
*More often than not*
At times I understand you
And I see how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
*Dalton, Sokol, John, how many more had there been? Have I?"
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
*"I don't think of you as a sister."*
But then the passion flares again
*"I know you were kissing her."*
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
"Hey Rabb, whatcha doing?"
"Tuna, turn that music off. I'm writing my change of designator request.
THE END!
