LAKE SEVAN, ARMENIA, JUNE 2000

The beautiful Lake Sevan has an area of 1,360 sq km. In the Soviet era it was jam-packed with tourists on weekend breaks from Yerevan and further afield, but now few Armenians can afford a car, let alone a holiday, and the surrounding hotels stand empty and dilapidated

Catering staff take a break

A busker serenades the stones, accompanying himself on a traditional Armenian instrument. This is on the path leading up to a church which overlooks the lake

A couple of soldiers also take some time out to appreciate the scenery
