Mary Ella Buchanan Gardner

This is a picture of Mary Ella Buchanan Gardner, while still a young woman living in Shreveport. She met her childhood sweetheart, former Mayor James C. Gardner, of Shreveport, when they were thirteen. They married at the age of twenty, while Jim was in the Army, before he went overseas.

They both graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She received her Bachelor's degree in journalism and enjoyed the newspaper very much and one time accompanied her husband to Angola Prison, in south Louisiana, while he was Louisiana State Representative and covered the horrible living conditions of the women prisoners for the Shreveport Times.
